How to Set Constraints on Variables in Mathematica?
Ah yes you were definitely right about the sum. Simple mistake. As for the integration, that is exactly the sort of thing that I was looking for. Now that I have a lead, I'm sure I can read up on the documention and figure out exactly how to do it.- Hazerboy

How to Set Constraints on Variables in Mathematica?
Yep, that will work well for summation, but not for integration - Mathematica won't have the initial condition that n is an integer. AND I don't think it yields *quiet* the right answer, though I don't understand why. Mathematica gives the sum as (-1+(Pi^2)/8), while the answer I found on...- Hazerboy

How to Set Constraints on Variables in Mathematica?
Sorry I'm sort of deleting the template here, but my question isn't a strict HW help problem. I wasn't sure where else to ask it. I need to take an integral given that a certain variable is an integer, odd, and greater than zero, on mathematica. I'm integrating with respect to the variable x...- Hazerboy

CM: Calculus of Variations Airplane problem
Homework Statement "An aircraft whose airspeed is vo has to tfly from town O (at the origin) to town P, which is a distance D due east. There is a steady gentle wind shear, such that v-wind = Vy(x-hat) [the wind shear is in the x direction...]. x and y are measured east and north respectively...- Hazerboy

Rigorous Intro to analysis/calculus
hah I was just going to recommend Spivak. I took honors calc as a freshman for 3 quarters and we used it- very interesting, *tough* material. Thankfully none of the tests were as hard as the problem sets. Why are you looking for an alternative, out of curiousity?- Hazerboy

If you could take Intermediate E&M again
So far the only methods I've learned for partial differential equations are separation of variables and very easy change of variables stuff, which we covered in my quantum class. For we covered all sorts of Fourier analysis and solutions for ODE's in my math methods class. So I'm thinking over...- Hazerboy

Programs Is it too late for a physics degree?
At the university of chicago we have all sorts of "old" graduate students in my undergrad physics classes. I know of one that is in his late twenties or early thirties that, after getting a degree in computer science from U of I, came to Uchicago to get a degree in Physics. He's doing pretty...- Hazerboy

Courses Freshman: 107 hours of Straight Technical courses. How to deal? Tips?
They don't look down on it, most of the time AP classes are just easier than top tier core classes (depending on where you go!). I can't count the people I know who got 5's on their AP English tests and B's or C's in their humanities and social sciences courses (not quiet the same material, but...- Hazerboy

Is a Prestigious Undergrad really worth it?
You're right, they both can't pay for college for reasons out of their hands. Problem is the government can't distinguish between rich kids who they're parents just outright refuse to pay for an expensive college, and the rich kids whose parents would just *say* they wouldn't pay for an...- Hazerboy

Is a Prestigious Undergrad really worth it?
Of course there are all sorts of problems with the financial aid system, but to me this is a very simple fact: if your parents are rich and they just refuse to pay for your education, then I don't see why the government should. Thats why its called AID, not "we're going to help you if your...- Hazerboy

Is a Prestigious Undergrad really worth it?
I Lawl at this. Do you know anything about financial aid in the united states? EVERY top tier university, especially private ones, will give you a crap load of financial aid if you need it. If you're parents are low tier or have a hard time paying for college, you'll get a ton of money. High...- Hazerboy

If you could take Intermediate E&M again
Hi guys, first time poster. Currently I'm going to the university of chicago and signed up to be a physics major. I've already made it through my first year--so far I've taken classical mechanics, Intro to E&M, intro to waves, light, & Optics, and I'm almost done this year with "Modern Physics,"...- Hazerboy
