Just to add one thing. In the study, of course, the logic of behavior is supplied by an external agent. It is a computer program/simulation. However, that does not mean there must be an external agent. All it is saying is that strategies that "maximize the overall diversity of accessible future...
I think this might be implying that intelligence is not what it seems. In other words, intelligence does not require an external conscious agent and that the conscious agent (us) might not actually be as conscious as it believes.
For example, look at this...
sbrothy,
I am sort of awed by the paper too but maybe I am reading too much into it like you did.
I do think it would have some applicability to AI but I was looking at it more as physical explanation of life and biological intelligence. Or perhaps even explaining the fine tuning of the...
Let me add a 4. The universe did not start with gravity (gravity = 0) and its value is changing as the universe goes through various phase transitions. All of the visible universe at this time is in the same phase so its value appears constant to us.
I've been jumping around in the book.
Smolin's main driver for evolving natural laws seems to be cosmological natural selection. Universes with more black holes give birth to universes with more black holes. Life and intelligence evolve more as side effects of natural constants and structures...
Chalnoth,
I definitely mangled my comment but I think you misstated something in yours.
You say:
The geometrical entropy gets greater when matter collapses in on itself when dark energy is small.
It (geometrical entropy?) gets greater when matter spreads apart and becomes diffuse when dark...
Not sure I am quite following...
The distinction between geometric and matter entropy.
If matter entropy get lower under influence of gravity, then geometric entropy get greater?
Wouldn't that be Dark Energy?
Where I am going with my question...
Thanks, Marcus. I will spend some time looking at the links and rereading what you have posted.
I am very much aware of the role of gravity in negative entropy. My understanding is that after the initial expansion and cooling from the Big Bang the universe...
David Layzer wrote an article for Scientific American that explained the origin of order in the universe from the difference between actual and potential entropy. The graph he used showed actual and potential entropy increasing as straight lines with a growing gap between them over time. If we...
