What was your motivation to learn programming?

After thinking of my response and re-reading your comments, while wanting to earn a living wage did motivate me to seek employment, what kept me going was the challenge of programming new applications and learning new languages. I like to fix things and not everyone who programs understands...

What was your motivation to learn programming?

My 2cents worth. Fortran as part of Eng Sci curriculum. After that programming was self taught due to necessity. APL for physics lab, assembly language for job advancement. I programmed early video games and was upset when they wanted me to write object motion using a table instead of math. My...

Undergrad Is it feasible to measure one way speed of light this way?

Sorry for dragging this on. But what is bugging me is no one has mentioned entanglement. Is it possible to synchronize a clock at the destination using an entangled photon at the moment a test photon is released at the source to measure the oneway speed of that test photon?

Teaching about electromagnetic radiation & struggling

The comment about control holds. As I think about my hs teachers, they were all dedicated and wonderful, but some commanded respect more than others. Even adults can be cruel to each other. It's in our nature. I don't turn my back to barking dog regardless of any training I've had. I...

Teaching about electromagnetic radiation & struggling

I agree. I was surprised to find QM introduced in my grand daughters chem text. Historically we argued for centuries about whether light is a wave or particle which we now relate to proprties of rather than nomenclature. I still have trouble shifting gears between optics, EM and QM. I believe...

Teaching about electromagnetic radiation & struggling

OMG. After reflecting on my days in high school, I remembered that public schools are not just sources for education, but entertainment as well. We had pet names for teachers based on their physical features and body language. The first rule in teaching is control. If the sharper students detect...

Teaching about electromagnetic radiation & struggling

I'm wondering if the perceived problem is how to teach EMR rather than classical EMF. I have never seen a photon, but i have seen electronic waves on a scope. I never could picture photons in a standing wave or bouncing down a waveguide. Even Maxwell's equations are not written for photons. Not...

Teaching about electromagnetic radiation & struggling

Not sure if you can acquire signal generator and an oscilloscope. EMR is normally generated by an AC current/voltage flowing through a wire (antenna). You could visibly demonstrate the presence of EMR even w/o signal generator as 60Hz is virtually. everywhere. It's nice to see things instead...

Help With Shrinking a Circuit/Making it Fit Into a Tight Space

I like the comment about the thin oxide layer on contacts. Years ago I was writing assembly language software for a precursor to the PC, an intelligent terminal used for data entry. The engineers used to remove boards from the prototypes use erasers on the gold contacts and sometimes reseated...

Help With Shrinking a Circuit/Making it Fit Into a Tight Space

It is difficult to "see" from reading text. What struck me was the word wires doing the connection between two pcb's if I resd it correctly. I've been taking things apart since I was a kid to see how they are put together, most times to see if I can fix something that broke. Wires are always a...

High School How does the observable Universe have meaning?

I guess what bothers me is what is this photon telling you? And given the distances, is it that much different than what it tells an observer on Alpha Centari? I suppose I would have had similar comments about EPR. My head is known to be pretty thick.

High School How does the observable Universe have meaning?

Syntax, my apologies. The spell checker flagged it as erroneous.

High School How does the observable Universe have meaning?

Excuse me for my ignorance but does this discussion relate to practical or philosophical matters related to syntac. It appears we had enough problems describing the nature of things we can observe without expending creative energy trying to figure out what we can observe with either eye or any...

Help With Shrinking a Circuit/Making it Fit Into a Tight Space

I was not able to read your circuit. What bothered me is the discussion about component size. Why don't you use surface mount components? I know etching a board and soldering surface mount components take a certain amount of skill that many of us lack, but it may help.
