Random Photos
I took this photo about two weeks ago. A pair of mallard ducks had been swimming around in front of my house. Then I started seeing only the female, and not very often. Ducks normally fly off with loud quacking when I got near, but the lone female would quietly move off a short distance. I...- jrmichler

Random Photos
Apple tree shot out a side window of my house four days ago. This tree has given 90 to 100 lbs of apples every year for several years now. I normally get about 40 lbs, the food shelf gets about 40 lbs, and deer get about 10 lbs of apples. Cell phone camera with minor cropping. Two cherry...- jrmichler

Automotive Continuously Variable Transmission Idea
Thread reopened. I made a simple schematic sketch of what I think that mechanism is. Shaft 1 is geared to shaft 2. Shaft 3 is geared to shaft 4. Shaft 1 is connected to shaft 3 through a differential. Shaft 2 is connected to shaft 4 through a differential. Turning shaft 1 turns shaft 2...- jrmichler

Torque to turn a large Beam on a Rotisserie
BTDT, so I'm speaking from experience. You need a sufficient safety factor in the torque calculation. I suggest calculating torque based on 35 mm eccentricity between CG and center of rotation. With a safety factor that large, and your selection of bearings, you can ignore bearing friction...- jrmichler

Why no heatpump/refrigerator combos?
From my electric bill for December 2025. July was high because of air conditioner and dehumidifier. December and January are high because of furnace blowers. Electric dryer is used year around. Computers are turned off when not in use. All lights are LED. The house was designed to be...- jrmichler

Why no heatpump/refrigerator combos?
Refrigerator bought new in 2002: 39 Kwh/month. Newer refrigerator bought 2011: 35.8 Kwh/month. Data is from a Kill-A-Watt power monitor. Our total electric power consumption is 250 to 300 Kwh per month.- jrmichler

Nozzle Design Questions
But such a nozzle can be made by additive manufacturing. Rifle suppressors (AKA silencers) are now made using additive manufacturing.- jrmichler

High School How can one relate jerk and force?
The Wikipedia article is correct, BUT you need to be very aware of the difference between simplified physics calculations and real world calculations. Simplified physics calculations assume rigid point masses, while the real world has elastic masses with physical size. If you apply a force...- jrmichler

Depleting Glycogen storage before fat burning, or not?
The ratio of fat versus glycogen burning is a function of exercise intensity, duration, aerobic fitness, diet, and other variables. The chemistry is similar for running, walking, swimming, cross country skiing, or other exercise. It's all covered in the book.- jrmichler

Depleting Glycogen storage before fat burning, or not?
Get a copy of Lore of Running 4th Edition, by Tim Noakes, MD. The answer to your question is in there, although you will need to spend some time digging. If not in the text, the list of references runs about 100 pages. Sample from page 107 (MUCH more in the text):- jrmichler

Guidance for using mica strip heaters
In order to heat the aluminum strips to 750 deg F, the heater will need to be at a higher temperature. How much higher depends on design details, but I suggest using a design temperature at the heater of at least 900 deg F. I do not advise steel HVAC duct. That material is zinc plated...- jrmichler

My glasses are giving me a neck cramp
After I had cataract surgery, I experimented with reader glasses from the rack at the pharmacy. The +2.5 worked for normal reading, and +1.5 worked for my computer monitor. The +1.5 glasses did not work for reading. Then I got an eye exam with a prescription for bifocals. The distance...- jrmichler
