Expected Number of Girls Born in a Hospital on a Given Day
Ahh, ok. I was way off. Now, I'm not trying to pick bones - certainly not with any of the posters - but, imo, it's a poorly worded question. Wouldn't a better way to ask this question be, "How many girls would you have expected to have been born on that day?" or "How many girls did you...- LearningMath

Expected Number of Girls Born in a Hospital on a Given Day
Well, the problem definitely confuses me. Here's what I'm thinking, though: I think I would have expected ~ 15 girls to have been born before the day started. After hearing about the 25 boys born, then I'd say I'd then expect around 5 girls born, only b/c (I suppose) the fact that the average...- LearningMath

Expected Number of Girls Born in a Hospital on a Given Day
Quick correction: The OP's question said 25 boys were born on that day: It might influence the answer - which I don't know.- LearningMath

Solve Ratio Word Problem: Add 1.6667 lbs Barley to Mixture
Hi all! Thanks for the encouragement - math frustrates me sometimes. Anyway, sorry for the delayed response and thanks for the help! I've come up with an equation that produces the right answer, but it doesn't look exactly like the book's nor your's, Halls. This has made a lot clearer in...- LearningMath

How many times will you bring drinks to a home game in a 20 game season?
I think you're right. Here's how I came up with that. You've got 20 total games. Every third game is a home game - that doesn't divide evenly into 20 and since you can't have a half of a game or a third of a game (unless this is some weird version of soccer), then that leaves us with...- LearningMath

Solve Ratio Word Problem: Add 1.6667 lbs Barley to Mixture
Ok, I am not being facetious or lazy, but I really don't know how to solve this one. I've spent a while on it and it's just not clicking. When I tried setting up your equation I got -1 (4=5+w)!, which is clearly not right. What (I think) I know is that there is an 80/20 split between oats...- LearningMath

Prime Factorization Homework Problem 3
My guess at this one: 84. Here's how I arrived at this answer. 1) There are two instruments, a triangle and a tympani, that play every 12 beats and every 42 beats, respectively. 2) Find the prime factors of the two numbers. 12 = 2 * 2 *3; 42 = 7 * 6 = 7 * 3 * 2 3) Select...- LearningMath

Prime Factorization Homework Problem 2
Ok, same caveat (not very good at math), but here's what I think: 2012. Here's how I arrived at that. i) Forget the 2000s, they are just confusing. Since it starts at 0, just focus on the 4 and the 6. A president gets elected every 4 years & a senator every 6 years. ii) Find the...- LearningMath

Prime Factorization Homework Problem 1
I'm not one to be trusted in math, but I think the answer is 12 weeks. Here's how I got that: Frequencies = 1/2 ; 1/3 ; 1/4 Least (Lowest) Common Multiple - 12 How I arrived at 12 (i.e., factoring the denominators) 1/2 = 2 1/3 = 3 1/4 = 2 * 2 Since the twos repeat...- LearningMath

Help with Sign Reversals in Solving Quadratic Inequalities
You are right. While the answers are correctly written, I mistyped the signs in the work. It should read: x - 3 > 0 and x + 3 > 0 --or-- x - 3 < 0 and x + 3 < 0 --so-- X > 3 or X<-3 ------- Ok, I'm still not getting it, which is frustrating b/c I'm sure it's a fairly...- LearningMath

Is this a really secret of Stock Market?
The strategy of "minimizing losses and maximizing gain" is a very sound one. Among other things, it helps create profit (rev > costs). That said, I think there are a few flawed assumptions in your comment. Like Halls said, is a rather blanket statement. Furthermore, in terms of the...- LearningMath

Help with Sign Reversals in Solving Quadratic Inequalities
Homework Statement Here are two, unconnected example problems, having to do with quadratic inequalities. I'm confused b/c I understand how to solve them with an = sign, but as inequalities the book shows extra steps where signs get reversed and a total of ~ 4 possible answers come up instead...- LearningMath
