Troubleshooting a Dead Laptop: Hardware or Virus? Expert Advice

You've probably either solved the problem or have given up by now, but I have a question. After the laptop shuts down do you have to press the power button twice to get it to turn back on? If so it is likely a thermal issue, and for such an event to occur so quickly is very odd. It's probably...

Gears, Pulleys, & Electric Motor Questions

Gear motors have mechanical reduction built in so the whole thing mounts as one piece. Good call pantaz. That defiantly simplifies things, in addition to probably lowering your cost and reducing the size and foot print of your project.

What does it take to work at ITER?

I'm a dummy, I was thinking CERN not ITER. My foot tastes great.

Is there a thorium breeder reactor in the USA's Future?

Hey thanks, I was just focusing on the MSRs because they are relatively new to me.

What steps can I take to jumpstart my career in CFD?

Find an old FEA book, and work though some of it. I can set up runs in Fluent in my sleep. I attribute this to a healthy understanding of what the computer does for you. It adds quality and depth to what just end up being default values and arbitrary clicks to most people. It will also show in...

Why Is Understanding Basic Concepts in Structural Analysis Challenging?

I wouldn't expect help from someone if I don't make the effort to help my self. Make an attempt and come back with questions. This is very basic stuff.

Gears, Pulleys, & Electric Motor Questions

Your request sounds fairly straight forward, although I have some concerns. I am assuming this is a one off project, if you could provide more detail I'd be happy to help with design. As with sourcing parts you're on your own there, sorry. First what size and rpm is you motor, and how have you...

Is Graphene the Future of Computer Technology?

At this point the major drawback concerning graphene are its physical properties, exactly what makes it such a phenomenal substance. Graphene is basically a sheet 1 atom thick of carbon atoms, or an unrolled carbon nano tube(i don't think anyone has actually unrolled a nano tube). Stacking...

Is there a thorium breeder reactor in the USA's Future?

I have been reading sporadically about China's development of a thorium molten salt reactor. I am not aware of much activity in the US. Has anyone heard of the US building next gen reactors in the next 10-15 years? It seems nuclear power here is dead. Also is it true that the thorium...

What does it take to work at ITER?

My answer.. Get a Ph.D in High Energy Physics, do post doc research lecture some snot nosed kids, get published in some fancy physics journal, then maybe if the janitor suddenly drops dead. You can work at ITER. To translate my answer, if you don't want to be the research lead then I don't...

Can someone explain why this works?

Perhaps you are playing tricks on yourself. Someone once made the point that the easiest person to fool is yourself. Or maybe your friend was wearing wool socks and scooting across carpet and the copper pipe accumulated a static charge and concentrated it on the surface of the crystal. The...

Undergrad What Causes Unusual Cloud to Cloud Lightning?

Well this is my first thread so I figured I'd start off on the right foot in the crazy forum. In all seriousness I would like to attempt to explain some experiences I've had that I have been unable to find an explanation for. I will provide as much detail as I can recall to try an aid anyone...

Can you actually do this?(laser shooting to moon)

Yes it is incredible, even 40 years later. As a consequence Nasa can measure the moon's distance to millimeter resolution( maybe more , not sure). They also use it to help calculate the orbit of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. I have to assume it has been used to impress a woman at one point...
