Discovering My Passion for Science: A First Year Uni Student's Journey
IMO, a passion is something that energizes you. What is it that makes you excited? For instance, when you are about to go on vacation, are about to play a new video game (if you're a gamer), or are about to spend time with good friends, you probably notice that your energy level instantly go up...- lifter

Programs I am doing PhD in Physics and interested in medical physics
No. During a massters or certificate program, you might be able to earn a bit of money on the side by assisting in research, but I am unaware of anything like a GRA for masters or certificate students. In other words, you will have to take out loans or pay for tuition out of pocket and try to...- lifter

Programs I am doing PhD in Physics and interested in medical physics
You must have 3 years of full-time clinical experience OR you a 24 month residency. It doesn't say it on the ABR website (at least, I couldn't find it), but it was stated in several presentations on certification at a recent AAPM meeting.- lifter

Programs I am doing PhD in Physics and interested in medical physics
The 2012 initiative requires that candidates taking Part 1 of the ABR exam in 2012 or later must be enrolled in or graduated from a CAMPEP accredited program. That program can be a residency, an MS program, a PhD program, DMP program, or a certificate program. The only requirement is that it is...- lifter

Traditional Pension vs. 401k: Which is the Better Retirement Option?
Max out all of your tax advantaged avenues first. That's $17k in 401k and $5k in Roth or Traditional IRA. I like to invest in a Traditional 401k (pre-tax contributions) and a Roth IRA (post-tax contributions) so that I can diversify my taxed and non-taxed income when I retire. If you make too...- lifter

Programs I am doing PhD in Physics and interested in medical physics
This is the one in the USA: https://grahamschool.uchicago.edu/php/medphysics/index.php It is CAMPEP accredited and it makes you board eligible. Having talked with some of the program directors at a few CAMPEP accredited residencies (one of them a top notch facility), I can say that the...- lifter

Engineering Civil Engineering vs Nuclear Engineering
I'm a Nuclear Engineer. I worked with a BS as a Reactor Engineer and I am now working with my PhD as a Research Scientist. Nuclear Engineering has a few sub-areas of interest, with the two primary areas being: 1. Nuclear Power and 2. Radiation Studies. A BS who wants to work on the Nuclear Power...- lifter

Programs I am doing PhD in Physics and interested in medical physics
Thanks, Choppy. I'm a PhD and am planning to enter a certificate program (applied and waiting to hear back), go for a residency, and then get into the workforce. I have no location restriction for a residency or job, so hopefully that will help me in what seems to be a competitive field from...- lifter

Programs I am doing PhD in Physics and interested in medical physics
Question regarding the ABR certification: If someone was entering a CAMPEP accredited residency with a PhD, can't they sit for Part 1 of the ABR boards in that first year of the residency? From my understanding, Part 2 requires 3 years of experience, so, assuming you passed Part 1, that can be...- lifter

Physics Is Medical Physics a Saturated Field?
See, that is what I was afraid of. Right now I have a good job at a national lab, and I think it may be foolish to leave that position for an industry that may be experiencing a bottleneck ... decisions, decisions.- lifter

Physics Is Medical Physics a Saturated Field?
Thanks for the information. When I read through thread like one on this board and another one one here (http://www.physicsgre.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2466&start=50), it worried me that maybe the field was saturated. I hear great things from some people and bad things from others. What you have...- lifter

Where Can Beginners Find Simple Geant4 Program Examples?
Some of you may want to check out GAMOS. It's almost a front end for geant that allows you to write input files much like you do in MCNP. http://fismed.ciemat.es/GAMOS/- lifter

I am considering a career in Medical Physics. I have a PhD in physics and am planning on entering either the CAMPEP accredited certificate program at University of Chicago or one in Canada. What worries me is that I have heard many conflicting viewpoints on the current state of Medical Physics...- lifter
