Is it ok to get a B.S degree in Applied Mathematics and then a M.S in Computer Science?
You might ask, why not a B.S in CS and then M.S in CS .
the answer to this is,, i am already a senior in Applied math and since several courses in CS were required for my degree , ( i.e : Computer...
Consider this example , f(x)_as x approaches 1_= 2x + 3 = 5
We must prove that:
for each positive number ", there is a positive number delta such that
| (2x + 3 ) - 5| < epsilon for all x satisfying 0 < | x -1 | < delta
that is | 2(x - 1 ) | < epsilon , for all x satisfying 0 < | x -1 | <...
i recommend you start early because there might be some sections that will require more time than the others, so if you start early you'll have extra time if you get stuck.
Try Professor Paul's Online notes which is available to anyone ,this is his website...
We are not going to be using a particular book, we are going to use a book he wrote himself , PDF files at his website , i think chapter 1 is the heat equation , then wave equation, sturm louville , Fourier etc etc ,
Elarson can i send you these notes so you can see if they are similar to...
I have taken Calculus 1 , 2 , 3 , Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, and Introduction to adv. Math which is just , naive set theory, methods of proof, mathematical induction , infinite sets ( a headache by the way) , and sequences and limits with delta epsilon proofs.
Advanced Calculus...
yes, he meant adv. calculus , but i am not a pure math major, i am an Applied math major , i don't need to take abstract algebra, number theory , topology etc..
Applied math majors don't take those courses, for grad school, they take i think something similar to take on fluid dynamics...
Guys i need some advice, for the Spring semester i have to take 2 math courses but there is one that i am not sure if i should take it.
that course is Partial Differential Equations, this is the description for MAP 4401 :
A second course in differential equations. Topics may include:Heat...
Is Advanced calculus absolutely necessary in order to succeed in PDE ?
The problem is that my school does not require me to take Adv Calculus since i am an applied math major , i am not even required to take a proof based course here's the link for the major (...
Wait, in the original cauchy proof, e/2 + e/ 2 is e , but at the end it becomes
e < e ?? isn't this false
| a_n - a_m | < e , we have to satisfy this
with e /2 we reach e < e ??
I think i am going to follow your advise Mutton, (1) seems not to be connected to the proof.
In the proof if e > 0 then it must be true for e / 2 , and e/2 is used because at the end the answer is e
Thanks again Mutton.
the name of the book is , Introduction to Analysis , by Edward D. Gaughan 5th edition

i have a question , can we just forget about part (1) where the author gets 2e , and just go straight to the proof, because the proof seems that doesn't need the part where the author gets 2e
This is what it is in my book, i don't know how it went from saying that the difference is 2e and then using e/2 . The part that confuses me , is why the book outlines (1) to then use it in the proof, it looks that (1) doesn't even matter because since e > 0 then e/2 will do just fine.

how can e/4 work ?
could you please give me your version of this cauchy sequence ( explaining the e/2 's or 2e's . My book is confusing me more.
