Thanks, ( oops I got proton mixed up, sorry) Is there any possibility that gluon's are a force or a field rather than a particle. The term virtual makes me want to focus on its function. If it mediates the strong force could it be interpreted in a different way?

I want to learn more about gluons. I understand that they are what bind the neutrons and protons into a nucleus. Do they spontaneously arise from a neutron+ positron relationship or are they related to some process?

Thanks. I get hung up on theory laden terms I guess. The only way I can make sense of bosons and fermions is to see them as field interactions.

Does the down quark actually emit a W boson or does the boson appear from interactions with fields.

So, is it fair to say that all we really know about a boson, (any boson) is the it wasn't there and then it was...at the same time another particle either changes direction/momentum or spin. Also is it right for me to think that the weak force is really an interaction with the "background"...

So would I be safe to say the z boson. Does not work alone but as an intermediary?
