Freezing in the gulf oil pipeline
I was wondering if someone could explain how ice crystals are being formed in the tank/pipeline BP is trying to use to stem the flood of oil pumping into the ocean. A friend and me were discussing it and a few questions came to mind about it, not just related to this issue. He suggested that...- Mark24

Movies for hardcore sci-fi geeks
Tesla is also a character in the Sanctuary series. That's bordering on fantasy more than Sci-Fi, though. His character is a vampire with an obsession with electricity.- Mark24

News What would probably be the most impactful steps to stop seal bashing?
Spot on. Natural predators of animals like deer once helped to keep populations in check, but they have disappeared. If deer, for example, are not thinned out, there will be consequences. Automobile accidents would skyrocket like you mentioned. The american deer tick, responsible for...- Mark24

Schools Is the schedule at a 4 year University anything like this:
Not sure on the science majors, but doing 19 hours as an engineering major at a difficult school would be quite a gutsy move. The typical load at my college for most engineering students is 12-14 hours. That, plus anywhere from 20-40 hours a week in additional homework and studying depending...- Mark24

News What would probably be the most impactful steps to stop seal bashing?
I think it's a great idea. You could name the club: "Club Seals." Or perhaps, "Club Baby Seals" would be even more appropriate. That's bound to raise awareness.- Mark24

Movies for hardcore sci-fi geeks
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the Babylon 5 series still remains the best Sci-fi series/show I've ever seen on television, some 15 years after the fact. The overarching storyline made it fairly unique as far as series go, with nearly the entire story having been written prior to airing...- Mark24

Global Warming & Climate Change Policy
Who decides if the person responding to an inquiry is an expert or not? You? This sounds like an appeal to authority, and science should not be subject to that. Science should be able to stand on its own based upon the evidence. IMO, this attitude demonstrates the whole problem with the AGW...- Mark24

Global Warming & Climate Change Policy
I'm very sad to see this post. As someone who has mainly lurked on the PF forums, I've found the Earth forum - specifically the discussion on global warming - to be one of the best resources for understandable and unbiased science on the issue. I've been a skeptic of AGW, mainly because...- Mark24

Using inertia tensor in conservation of angular momentum
Thanks tiny-tim, how they derived the moments of inertia makes sense now after you explained it. Since the inertias seem to be correct but I'm still getting the wrong answer, I must be messing up the final equation - the one listed in the second picture as: Imat(0,0,w1)oa = Ioa*w2 For Ioa...- Mark24

Using inertia tensor in conservation of angular momentum
Hi all, this is my first post. I'm under the gun at the moment because we were just told yesterday to expect a similar problem to the one below on our final, yet we were not taught how to work such a problem in class. (Our teacher does not write the final hence the discrepancy.) I have a...- Mark24
