MHB Understanding Dice Throwing Probabilities: A Layman's Guide
Thank you very much. The problem I and my colleagues have is that none of us are mathematicians. Hence we don't understand what is being said. You have very kindly set out a formula. Is there any way you can set that out in very simple terms that would help us? None of it is anything that we...- Peterconfused

MHB Understanding Dice Throwing Probabilities: A Layman's Guide
Thanks for your reply. The game being played is simply that you throw the 7 dice and if 4 land showing the same number you win a prize. 5, 6 or 7 showing the same will give better prizes still. We are wanting to look at how the odds would change using a different number of dice and a different...- Peterconfused

MHB Understanding Dice Throwing Probabilities: A Layman's Guide
Hello Thanks for the reply. It was someone from MHB who quoted binomial coefficients. I don't understand them. Anyway, I think I will just have to soldier on. Best regards Peter- Peterconfused

MHB Understanding Dice Throwing Probabilities: A Layman's Guide
Hello Thank you very much for replying. Possibly we are at cross purposes here. I am wanting to know the odds or probabilities of, say, 7 dice being thrown and the same number showing on 4 of them. I was given to understand that there is a formula which can be used to calculate the odds...- Peterconfused

MHB Understanding Dice Throwing Probabilities: A Layman's Guide
Hello I am involved with a Rotary Club which uses a dice game to raise funds at various events. We want to look carefully at the probabilities of throwing dice. Can you tell me please in very basic layman's terms the odds on the same number being thrown on 4 out of 7 dice in one throw (which...- Peterconfused

MHB What are the odds of rolling 4, 5, 6, and 7 of a kind with 7 dice?
Thank you very much for your time and patience. We are into areas that are totally outside my knowledge or understanding. We never did anything like that when I was at school (very many years ago!). If you could be very kind and tell me the probabilities for 5, 6 and 7 numbers out of 7 being the...- Peterconfused

MHB What are the odds of rolling 4, 5, 6, and 7 of a kind with 7 dice?
Thank you again. I am starting to get there (slowly!). The only thing I still don't understand is how 7 over 4 equals 35. Your patience is really appreciated Peterconfused- Peterconfused

MHB What are the odds of rolling 4, 5, 6, and 7 of a kind with 7 dice?
Many thanks for the quick response. I am not a mathematician and unfortunately don't understand the equation. I simply cannot work out how you reach the final result. On the top line, how do you arrive at 4375? On the bottom line 6 to the power of 7 I thought should be 279,936. Yours gratefully...- Peterconfused

MHB What are the odds of rolling 4, 5, 6, and 7 of a kind with 7 dice?
Could somebody please tell me, in layman's terms, the answer to the following: When 7 standard six sided dice are thrown what are the odds of 4 showing the same number, 5 showing the same number, 6 and 7. Also the odds of 7 sixes being thrown. This is all to do with a game used to raise money...- Peterconfused
