Job Skills Value of an engineering PhD versus a Masters ->Industry

Signal Processing/Machine Learning. I would pursue the same thing at the PhD level. I'm honestly, not really sure. I do know the PhD wouldn't be focused on a commercial product, it would be more theoretical/foundational, not really application based. Is it better to spend 4 years on something...

Job Skills Value of an engineering PhD versus a Masters ->Industry

A potential advisor told me that if I want to do a PhD, it needs to be looked at like a full time job and you have to really want the PhD in of itself. I have heard of other people doing PhDs with lots of extra time but it's not how these guys expect. What's true? I have thought about what I...

Job Skills Value of an engineering PhD versus a Masters ->Industry

I need to decide if I want to continue onto a PhD in Electrical Engineering or exit with my MS. I'm not sure what to do, I think academics is kind of cool and I would like to learn more, on the otherhand I sort of want to start working on Real World projects that have some impact and making an...

Other What's the value of Classical Physics?

Particle accelerators work approximately according to classical E&M, it doesn't mean that developing an accelerator based upon a more advanced theory wouldn't be better.

Other What's the value of Classical Physics?

I don't know where to put this but it is a question which is bothering me. From the perspective of a physicist who wants to generate new theories, what's the value in spending significant time learning classical theories? People slave always at books like Jacksons Electrodynamics but it's not...

Other I messed up and I’d like to return to school at 30

This is stupid, OP has a bunch of graduate credit, nearly every program will graduate you with something smaller than an actual thesis(like my departments essentially didn't have any requirement beyond demonstrating you learned something and writing it up). Go back and find the bare minimum you...

Other I messed up and I’d like to return to school at 30

Most masters degrees let you do a project or expositor paper to graduate, why on earth didn't you finish?

Programs Robotics - 2nd BS vs non-degree vs neither

Sure, it might just be my department so maybe I'm over stating it though - there is one guy who does legged robots but the vast majority of the department focus on AI related things. Optimal information gathering, path planning under uncertainty, social navigation, multi-robot coordination...

Programs Robotics - 2nd BS vs non-degree vs neither

I can say from my own department which does research in robotics that none of it is related to any of things berkeman listed. It's almost exclusively related to the thinking aspects of the systems(which is the current impediment to getting them into the real world). Physical systems have been...

Programs Robotics - 2nd BS vs non-degree vs neither

I don't get it, you're acting like the MS in CS has no value when it's measurably better than a degree in robotics for jobs. If you really think it's so bad I wouldn't continue doing it. << Mentor Note -- thread edited to remove profanity >>

Programs Robotics - 2nd BS vs non-degree vs neither

Realistically? Udacity, Edx or Coursera to bridge the gap. The mathematics courses is probably all you will need since robotics doesn't really touch physics. I don't understand how you could get a MS degree in CS with a focus on ML without taking more advanced calculus or linear algebra though...

Testing Perseverance And Perspective... please help

Don't do so much, that's all their is to it. Take a reduced course load, don't tutor. To be honest the other stuff you're doing wont matter to any graduate school if your GPA is sub 3. Maybe more jobs would be willing to overlook it considering your other time commitments but nobody in academics...

Programs Robotics - 2nd BS vs non-degree vs neither

Here's some info from someone who did enough for a dual graduate degree in robotics: It's mostly glorified CS with a dynamics/linear control course added. If you did CS in ML you're already pretty good off, you probably didn't cover things like SLAM but other than that the core CS topics still...

Engineering Do electrical engineers actually use Circuit Analysis skills?

I know, it's one of the reasons I avoided doing analog IC design. I also think there will only be a few SoC makers. Don't need multiple companies designing chips which do essentially the same thing.

Engineering Do electrical engineers actually use Circuit Analysis skills?

It's going to be real funny when machine learning and optimization algorithms take over the design process.
