Schools Grad school emphasis on intro-level grades, computer science
I'm sorry if this is a bit of a mundane question but we all do impulsive things when we're anxious. I may get a B+ in General Physics II and Calculus II this semester (2nd semester freshman). I know I am capable of much better, and to be honest, I was very bogged down emotionally/psychologically...- Ritzycat

Programs Is it too hard? (physics majors)
I would also disagree that skill in physics =/= skill in math. The math I am doing in physics (and I am only a freshman college student so take my word with a grain of salt) does not feel like the math that I do in calculus. It seems to me to be more a matter of expressing physical phenomenon in...- Ritzycat

Student Debt, feasibility & plan to repay
Thanks for all the responses. A few facts to clarify and answer questions: I have been working a part-time job since May 2014. I asked them for full-time when summer began earlier this year but they wouldn't do it. So I've done 16-20 hours a week. I will try hard to find a full-time job to do...- Ritzycat

Student Debt, feasibility & plan to repay
I'll be starting my undergrad this fall. As of now I will probably start majoring in physics. Nonetheless I expect to stay within the area of science. If I've done the math right I'll probably have 43K in debt. Of that 43k, 8k is federal unsubsidized loans with 4.29% interest rate, (will...- Ritzycat

Space engineering, astrophysics and cosmology
I am not an expert but I can offer some insight. Aerospace engineers who actually work in aerospace are dependent on the boom-bust cycles of the aerospace industry since it is something that goes in and out of style. If you have true interests in astronautical engineering I would go for the...- Ritzycat

Is $40k in Undergrad Debt Manageable for a Future PhD Student?
Grinnell is only marginally more expensive than the other schools I have been accepted to. It is certainly not 40k more. It is 9k more than my cheapest option that I've been accepted to. If I will not starve with 9k extra loans I believe it is worth it. Grinnell even requires research projects...- Ritzycat

Which Foreign Language Should a Math Major Learn?
Keep in mind you do not need to major in the language to achieve fluency, or a working knowledge in the mathematical and scientific realm. The best way is probably to simply take the language for a few years and study abroad if you can afford it and it will fit into your schedule. By all means...- Ritzycat

Is $40k in Undergrad Debt Manageable for a Future PhD Student?
Grinnell meets 100% of demonstrated financial need. I also received a scholarship. They offered me 45k/year in grants, loans, and work-study. This reduces the cost to 13k/year. Only those who do not apply for financial aid pay the sticker price on Grinnell's website. I am also not an Iowa...- Ritzycat

Is $40k in Undergrad Debt Manageable for a Future PhD Student?
Alright--I had heard elsewhere that I shouldn't expect to pay off any loans on a grad school stipend, but now that I think about it, 'twas not the most accurate source. That being said, is 40k undergrad debt something that can be doable?- Ritzycat

Is $40k in Undergrad Debt Manageable for a Future PhD Student?
Thanks for your response. I read Part 4. I understand that most PhD students receive assistantships for the duration of the program. However, I am more concerned about how having 40k in student debt from undergrad will affect my quality of life as a post-doc researcher making a fairly low...- Ritzycat

Is $40k in Undergrad Debt Manageable for a Future PhD Student?
Hi friends I am a high school student and I'll be going into college next year. I will likely be attending Grinnell College, with the initial intent of majoring in physics. (I do not need the talk of possibly changing interests, I realize that; I am planning for all possible outcomes) It is of...- Ritzycat

German is the second most widely used language in the science world. French is the third most used, and remains an official language in a lot of global organizations.- Ritzycat

Sound: Stones falling from cliffs
after some manipulation/substitution 343/t_2=0.5(9.8)(2.1-t_2)^2 t_2=5.6s T2 being the amount of time it takes for the sound to travel back up to the top of the cliff. It should not be a longer amount of time than the time it takes for the stone to fall AND for the sound to come back up...- Ritzycat

Sound: Stones falling from cliffs
Homework Statement A stone is dropped from the top of a cliff. The splash it makes when striking the water below is heard 2.1s later. The speed of sound in air is 343 m/s. How high is the cliff? Homework Equations Δx=½at^2 t_1+t_2=2.1s t_2=x/343m/s The Attempt at a Solution I used those...- Ritzycat
