Why is the moon constantly facing the Earth with the same side? Wouldn't the same thing happen to the Earth orbitting around the sun if the moon was absent? Much like Mercury?

Hypothetically if the moon suddenly explodes (reason irrelevant) how would that affect the Earth's spin (chaotic spin until zero spin?) and my main question is how long would it take for the planet to stop spinning? Would one side constantly face the sun in the end?

Thank you Evo, very helpful reads both of them! The sun has about 4.5 billion years before it starts the giant phase. I wonder how long the moon has til it breaks free from the earth.

Thank you for the links and the insight. Is there a way to estimate roughly how long would a moonless Earth's chaotic to finally no spin scenario would take? Or at least make up a timeframe that is believable?
