Can we trust our measurements in cosmology?

Thank you Chalnoth ... very useful insights ... it makes very good sense In reference to the lamda cdm model, do we have any measurement results on dark matter yet, besides the computer modelling which shows there is a lot more mass than is accounted for in visible matter .. so this extra mass...

Can we trust our measurements in cosmology?

Thank you for that input. Let's take the CMB as a specific example. We observe it today but it was emitted 13 billion years ago. What distortions could have happened since, space is expanding, there is dark matter, dark energy, speed of light is not constant under different conditions, etc etc...

Can we trust our measurements in cosmology?

Morning everyone, We know of some illusions in our everyday experience, such as an echo making us believe someone is talking back at us, or mirages in the desert, or mirrors making us think there are two symmetric objects when one is only the reflection of another. I was wondering about...

What is the significance of a universe emerging from nothing?

What's the opinion on the "The Grand Design" by Stephen Hawking ? Is it a good reference for one who is interested in these sorts of questions?

    Arc length and definite integral

Thank you Chiro ... that's is what I hope to achieve ... I want to understand the concepts at the fundamental level and not just the equations

    Arc length and definite integral

Thank you JJacquelin ... that makes it perfectly clear now. micromass ... the book I read made an example as follows: A car travels at constant speed of 100 miles/hour, after two hours the car has traveled 200 miles. I paraphrase ... "it turns out that the area under the curve (where curve is...

    Arc length and definite integral

Hi everyone ... I am a first time poster from South Africa. I have been visiting the forum for some time. I am busy teaching myself calculus and physics. I have hiccup with the concept of definite integral and arc length of a function. In my understanding these should be the same thing...
