Schools Physics REUs 2016: Applying & Updates
LeHigh had their deadline like the first of march they should have first offers by the end of the month. I know Penn state made first round offers because I received one but had a better offer, last year I also got an offer from them by the 16th of march but I had personal reasons for not...- szimmy

How Can You Effectively Articulate Your Academic and Career Goals in REU Essays?
Somewhere on their website they should either have listed projects for this coming summer or previous years research. Go through and find some specific topics that you find interesting, they aren't going to be able to effectively match you with a professor if you just say you enjoy theory.What...- szimmy

Need help picking university course -- Physics vs Comp Sci
This is a tough thing to put into statistics since it varies depending on the level you are working for. If you're making solo games then likely you won't be able to salary yourself and will make not very much money at all (depending on success of course). If you are working in a smaller indie...- szimmy

Need help picking university course -- Physics vs Comp Sci
Game development does not have a high starting salary. Until you have a few completed projects under your belt at a studio you probably won't be making > 40,000. Once you finish projects (at least 2 years) you end up more in line with more "standard" programming jobs but on average make a good...- szimmy

Suggestions for Quantum Computation Ph.D Program?
Princeton's Electrical Engineering department has a few professors who do Quantum Information research, my reu topic here is in that field and all the graduate students who are in my mentors group were physics undergraduates- szimmy

What Are Your 2015 Summer Internship Plans?
A little late to the thread but I applied to Rutgers, Lehigh, Penn State, Notre Dame, and Princeton Center for Complex Materials. Accepted into Penn State and PCCM, took the Princeton position. Rising junior from a no name school, pretty excited! I'm sure my material based Reu from my home...- szimmy

Special Relativity: Collision of a Particle and Antiparticle
Homework Statement A particle and its anti-particle are directed toward each other, each with rest energy 1,000 MeV. We want to create a new particle with rest energy 10,000 MeV and total energy 100,000 MeV. What must the speed of the particle and antiparticle be before the collision. ERest0 =...- szimmy

Hudson River accident. Friction on water
The resistive force that water exerts is called drag, not friction. Friction occurs between two solid objects, and water being a liquid, behaves differently. You would be able to calculate the resistive force that water put on the plane, but there isn't a coefficient of friction to find.- szimmy

Spring attached to two hanging objects
The force you're calling tension, you should be calling something else. What other force is acting on the masses aside from gravity? You saying Fy = may = 0 is correct, but what are the forces that cancel out so that happens? Expand your Fy equation. "However, I'm not sure what to make...- szimmy

Work, Net work, Work done by friction
Some of what you said confused me Simon. "What you have written says that you need less energy when there is friction in the system. You need: W[net]=W[F]+W[f] But all you really want to say is that the energy needed is the amount to accelerate the stuff and the amount lost by some processes...- szimmy
