Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a lighthearted poll where participants identify with various famous physicist personalities. The scope includes personal reflections on character traits associated with these physicists, as well as humorous commentary on the nature of the poll itself.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express a desire for deeper discussion about their choices in the poll, suggesting that the poll lacks engagement.
  • One participant questions the eccentricity of the physicists listed in the poll, implying that many were likely eccentric in nature.
  • Another participant humorously reflects on their own chaotic thought process while creating the poll, indicating a lack of clarity in its initial formulation.
  • There is a mention of the classification of physicists like Michelson and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes as problematic figures, with one participant planning to provide reasons for their classification of Michelson.
  • A participant shares a personal anecdote about a professor's role in a Nobel-winning project, drawing a parallel to issues of credit and recognition in scientific achievements.
  • One participant openly identifies as an "asshole," aligning their personality with that of a physicist in the poll.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion contains multiple competing views regarding the personalities of physicists and the appropriateness of their classifications. Participants express differing opinions on the eccentricity and character of these figures, and the conversation remains unresolved regarding the classification of Michelson and others.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference personal experiences and anecdotes that may influence their views, but these are not universally accepted or verified. The discussion includes informal language and humor, which may affect the seriousness of the claims made.

This personality is more fun than Grimmus'! Choose the famous physicist personality that most closely resembles your own.

P.S. Perhaps one of the worst features of the poll option is that no one discusses their choice. Please, feel free to elaborate on why you see yourself as a Jock, Princess, Brain, Basket Case or Criminal... errr... wait wrong brat pack movie... I mean lover, comedian, serious dude, eccentric, @sshole, nerd or repressed homosexual.

Weren't most of the people in the poll at least slightly eccentric?

thanks for refining my poll and making it make soem sense

Oh man, now I feel bad... Sorry I said my poll was better... I was just joking around.

Hey look, 10% of the people who answered this poll most closely identify with Newton. It's good to know our statistics match those of the rest of society.

I have no idea about Michelson biography, so I have avoided it even if the *edited for potty-mouth* concept sounds interesting :)

Thinking outside the box? I never even knew there was a box

It would be rather interesting to know why Michelson has been classified as an .sshole. A real .sshole was Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, who took the work of his assistant to present it as own work on a conference and later on received the Nobel prize for an idea he had stolen.

I will post my reasons for classifying Michelson as an @sshole later... when I get some time to find some references.

Funny you should mention a stealing-the-Nobel-story. As an undergraduate, I worked for a professor who had designed the apparatus used to detect the binary pulsar which allowed Russell A. Hulse and Joseph H. Taylor, Jr to win the Nobel Prize.

Now each recipient is only allowed to invite something like seven guests to come with to the awards ceremony. If I remember the story correctly, one of these recipients envited Jocelyn Bell Burnell as a protest to her previous injustice.

There is a slight difference. They used the apparatus, but they did not steal the results and signed them as proper.

P.S: I'm still curious about Michelson..
