Roman numerals

dunno if this is an easy or hard question but can anyone answer this? why do we use roman numerals to label cartsian (i cant spell) sections and other things? is it becasue they have no place value?

Convention. Roman numerals certainly make it easy to distinguish the numbers refer to a quadrant, don't they? [:)]
