Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the concept of work in physics, specifically whether a negative force can result in positive work. Participants explore definitions and mathematical relationships related to work, including the conditions under which work is considered positive or negative.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested, Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for an example where a negative force results in positive work.
  • Another participant questions the definition of "work," suggesting a need for clarity.
  • One participant asserts that if both force and displacement are in the negative direction, the work done is positive, referencing the dot product of force and displacement.
  • A different participant emphasizes that if the angle between displacement and force is less than 90 degrees, work will always be positive.
  • Another participant expresses a desire for the original poster (OP) to respond before further discussion continues.
  • One participant reiterates the relationship between work, force, and displacement, suggesting that negative values for both can yield positive work.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the relationship between force, displacement, and work, with no consensus reached on whether negative force can lead to positive work.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference the mathematical definition of work but do not clarify specific conditions or assumptions that may affect their claims.

Is there an example where you are pushing in the negative direction (force in negative direction) and yet doing positive work?

please help me

What is the definition of "WORK"?

If you are pushing in the negative direction, and force is in the negative direction, the work done is always positive.

Work is the dot product of force and displacement. Thus if the angle between the displacement and force is less than 90 degrees, the work will always be positive.

Please try to give the OP a chance to answer.

Sorry, your post was not up as I was typing my response.

well, work is equal to Force * Displacement

I was thinking if displacement and force are both negative, it will give a pos. work
