Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around calculating uncertainty in measurements, specifically in the context of using a ruler with defined resolution. The original poster seeks clarification on how to determine uncertainty based on their textbook's description.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants explore the definition of uncertainty and its calculation based on measurement resolution. Questions arise regarding the clarity of the textbook's explanation and the application of the concept.

Discussion Status

Some participants have provided examples to illustrate the concept of uncertainty, suggesting that the resolution of the measuring tool directly influences the uncertainty calculation. However, there is no explicit consensus on the broader application or understanding of the concept.

Contextual Notes

The original poster mentions confusion regarding the textbook's explanation, indicating a potential gap in understanding how to apply the concept of uncertainty in practical scenarios.

I'm afraid you're going to need to be more specific in what you mean.

Sorry about that, when we make a measurement there is an uncertainty which can be calculated. My textbook says it is +- half the resolution. But that doesn't make it clear to me exactly how to calculate it. I'm quite confused.

Say you have a ruler, and the smallest markings on the meter measure millimeters. Then the resolution of the ruler is 1mm, and you can only make measurements within .5mm. Thus, your uncertainty is .5mm.
