Looking for Literature on Electromagnets

I'm looking to get a full understanding of what makes them work, any suggestions for some one not so familiar with the subject.

The second of volume of Feynman's lectures on physics is a good place to start. The text offers very deep insights without delving deep into heavy math. In contrast, you might consider Jackson's EM which is one of classic undergrad texts in the subject.
