SUMMARY

Artificial blackbodies have not yet been fully realized, but materials capable of absorbing over 95% of light have been developed. Current advancements focus on achieving near-perfect absorption, with ongoing research into the properties and implications of such materials. Theoretical discussions suggest that if a perfect blackbody were created, it would not allow visibility through it, potentially appearing as a void in space.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of blackbody radiation concepts
  • Familiarity with material science and optical properties
  • Knowledge of light absorption and emission theories
  • Basic principles of thermodynamics related to radiation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the latest advancements in materials that achieve high light absorption, such as Vantablack
  • Explore the implications of blackbody radiation in astrophysics
  • Investigate the theoretical models of perfect blackbodies and their potential applications
  • Learn about experimental setups for measuring light absorption in materials
USEFUL FOR

Physicists, material scientists, and engineers interested in optical materials and their applications in technology and research.

have people artificially created blackbodies yet? and if not, how close have they come?

oooh. that's cool. but let's say that one was found or created. would we see through it, or would it just be a hole in space? or neither?
