Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the perceived political bias in a skepticism and debunking forum, with participants expressing concerns about the quality of discourse and the presence of political rhetoric overshadowing scientific reasoning. The conversation touches on themes of belief attachment, suppression of ideas, and the intersection of politics and science.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants argue that the forum is dominated by politicized discourse rather than genuine scientific skepticism, suggesting a need for more logical reasoning.
  • Others challenge the notion of suppression, stating that moderation actions are in line with forum rules and not politically motivated.
  • A few participants express frustration with the attachment to personal beliefs, suggesting that this can lead to hostility in discussions.
  • There are claims that political biases influence the perception of scientific discussions, with some asserting that all political groups exhibit irrational beliefs.
  • Humor and sarcasm are used by participants to address the serious nature of the debate, with references to mythical figures and light-hearted banter about political affiliations.
  • One participant notes that while political squabbling occurs, other threads with potentially interesting topics remain unresolved.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of views, with no clear consensus on whether the forum is overly politicized or if the criticisms are valid. Multiple competing perspectives exist regarding the intersection of politics and scientific discourse.

Contextual Notes

Some participants reference specific forum rules and moderation actions, indicating a potential lack of clarity on what constitutes acceptable discourse. The discussion also highlights the challenge of separating personal beliefs from scientific discussions.

Sceptisim & debunking forum not really debunking new curttting edge scientific theorys/phemonomen, rather a very policitized right wing trash talk from a social minority. Bring back some sort of science or logical reasoning please if possible.

I must admit i smell a whiff of suppression round here atm, but I am going to play nice for now..

Suppression? No. The only suppression taking place involves violations of the forum rules. I have deleted one spam; which is not allowed. I have deleted posts in violation of PF policy due to foul and abusive language, and I have deleted a few posts that were strangely illegible.

Right wing? Now that's funny! Has anyone noticed my signature?

Oh yes, just in case all of this well considered criticism has ingored the obvious, nearly the entire UFO napster was posted by me. I have spent thousands of hours studying and promoting the subject.

Unfortunately the NSA recently AGAIN reorganized their website, so many of the links in the Napster still need to be corrected.

This reminds me of an essay title I had a few years ago: 'Can science be value free? Discuss'.

By the way, I too prefer my politicised debunking trash to come from the left

Can I take it that changing my name to "fucxkwad balls" 42 would be okay? To be frank, I think it kinda suits me.

you have the freedom to post topics that are "cutting edge scientific theories"...what is stopping you? be pro-active instead of griping about it...

Not with me really but I don't think this would violate the forum rules.

I would hope for more class from all of our members.

Me too. Can't tolerate such filth myself.

I'm glad to know it. That sort of thing is just a waste of memory and everyone's time, IMO. The problem I think is that people become very attached to their beliefs. A place like this exposes all of us in ways that can intrude on our personal beliefs. When this happens people can get pretty nasty. I have certainly had my moments in the past, though now I'm perfect.

We certainly do get attached to our beliefs, otherwise why believe in them? (A 'spot the chicken/egg' competition).

I think the original assertion the the formum is too right wing is a bit redundant really. I would guess that as hard as we try it is nigh on impossible to separate out our deeper feelings from science. This is probably why we see reputable scientists come to totally different conclusions over the same data.

The main thing is keeping a sense of perspective in such debates, not to mention a sense of humour. Everyone is entitled to their point of view, no matter how ridiculous it appears to us. And I am making the assumption that we are all adult enough to cope with our views being challanged, or being denounced as testicularily challenged (if that's the right term) from time to time. Its a big world and we all have enough room for our various views.

So come on now everybody: join me on the 'emotional intelligence' thread for a big group hug!

(No fascists allowed).

Just kidding! Fascists are welcome too! Bring your own birch!

Just never forget, in your new perfection, who it was who spent hours and hours and hours and hours grinding off those rough edges :-)

The implicit assumption here is that all right wing trash talk is illogical and un-scientific.
Reveals your bias quite clearly now, doesn't it ??

After having studied the paranormal over the last five or so years, I can safely conclude that no political group can claim anything about the other in regards to stupid beliefs.

Yes ,I should not have tried to take a bias in the first place. But there is definitely a lack of open mindedness around lately, it is 2004 after all.

username, I think the problem is that you expressed one of the most blatant examples of close-mindedness in this forum.

Frankly, I don't get your attack on right wing politics. You provided no examples, whatsoever.

Hasn't anyone noticed that while this immature political squabbling is going on, the issue of how a brownie defecates with only one buttock goes unresolved in another thread?

What? No link to this other thread?? Gadzooks zoob, have you no compassion for your fellow men? Please share with the rest of us.

Ahem. Hey guys, can we get back to the immature political squabbling please? There is a UFO with massive swastikas on it flying around out there and none of you seem to care.

  • #29
What do you wish to do?

Personally, I still shoot at anything that even reminds me of a UFO with Swastikas on it. Unfortunately I ran out of BBs years ago.

Hang fire -

"Claude Vorilhon was taking a pleasant hike in the mountains one day, so he relates, when he saw a UFO hovering nearby, the craft bearing a Star of David with a swastika inside the emblem. A glowing childlike figure stepped forth from the craft. The child conversed with Vorilhon, bestowing a new name on him, Rael, and informed the man that the reason he had been chosen to be contacted was because France was the birthplace of Earthly democracy (i.e. during the French revolution).

... Vorilhon, having adopted the name Rael, now insists to his numerous followers that "a world government and a new monetary system must be created. A single language will serve to unify the planet." He and his followers sport the Star of David/swastika emblem that he observed on the side of the UFO". http://www.ufoevidence.org/documents/doc1441.htm

I suspect that the childlike figure was a young George Bush, still glowing from a night out with the guys.

Okay Ivan, off to 7-11 for some ammo...
