How to Derive the Electric Field Outside a Charged Spherical Conductor?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on deriving the electric field outside a charged spherical conductor using Gauss's Law. It establishes that the electric potential inside a charged spherical conductor of radius R is given by V = keQ/R, while the potential outside is V = keQ/r. The relationship between electric field and electric potential is defined by Er = -dV/dr, which is crucial for calculating the electric field in this context.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Gauss's Law
  • Familiarity with electric potential and electric field concepts
  • Knowledge of calculus, specifically differentiation
  • Basic principles of electrostatics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the application of Gauss's Law in electrostatics
  • Learn about the derivation of electric fields from electric potentials
  • Explore the concept of electric field lines and their properties
  • Investigate the behavior of electric fields in different charge distributions
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, electrical engineers, and anyone interested in understanding electrostatics and electric field calculations related to charged conductors.

What is your question? You basically would have, i believe, two types of questions related to electric field and a sphere. When the charge is all on the surface of a sphere or when it is uniformly distributed. Usually Gauss law is used in both cases, basically you youse this law for all gaussian surfaces, because it takes advantage of symmetrical shapes, such as a sphere in this case.

txs, for replying stupidmath. My question is if the electric potential inside a charged spherical conductor of radius R is given by V = keQ/R, and the potential outside is given by V = keQ/r. Using Er = -dV/dr, how would I derive the electric field outside this charge distribution?
