Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the announcement of Bristol Palin entering the speaking circuit with fees ranging from $15,000 to $30,000 per appearance. Participants express their opinions on the rationale behind such fees, her qualifications as a speaker, and the implications of her celebrity status, particularly in relation to her advocacy for abstinence.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question the value of paying high fees for Bristol Palin to speak, expressing disbelief and skepticism about her qualifications.
  • Others highlight the irony of her being an abstinence speaker given her personal history, suggesting it could be seen as comedic or hypocritical.
  • A few participants draw parallels between her speaking fees and those of other celebrities, like Paris Hilton, arguing that celebrity status often dictates speaking fees regardless of the topic's seriousness.
  • Some comments suggest that the choice of speaker for topics like abstinence should ideally be someone with relevant experience, raising questions about the appropriateness of her role.
  • There are mentions of political contributions and the potential for speakers to serve as a means for companies to influence political relationships, although this point is less directly related to Bristol Palin's speaking engagements.
  • Participants also comment on the perception of Sarah Palin as a mother, with mixed views on her parenting and its relevance to Bristol's speaking career.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally express skepticism and critique regarding Bristol Palin's speaking fees and qualifications, but there is no consensus on the appropriateness of her role as a speaker or the implications of her celebrity status.

Contextual Notes

Some comments reflect a lack of clarity on the motivations behind high speaking fees and the broader implications of celebrity culture on public speaking engagements.

Who on Earth would pay $15,000 to $30,000 to hear her speak? Why?

Bristol Palin to hit speakers' circuit

JUNEAU, Alaska – Bristol Palin is hitting the speakers' circuit and will command between $15,000 and $30,000 for each appearance, Palin family attorney Thomas Van Flein said Monday.

Van Flein confirmed a report by celebrity news website RadarOnline that the daughter of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has signed with Single Source Speakers. He added her exact fees will depend on factors such as which group she's addressing and what she must to do prepare.

Bristol Palin, 19, is listed on the speaking group's website as available for conferences, fundraisers, special events and holidays, as well as women's, youth, abstinence and "pro-life" programs.

The funniest comment from someone from the link provided is, "I wish her grandmother had used birth control."

...wow...just, wow...

Nice work if you can get it!

And she does have a kid to support.

She's "famous" for getting pregnant and being the daughter of someone famous and has the audacity to ask for that much money to talk to people about abstinence of all things.
At best that sounds like the premise for a comedy skit.

I'd look for it on SNL next weekend. Too good to pass up, and Lorne Michaels is not one to let current affairs get stale.

Paris Hilton gets paid $100,000's just to show up at a club on opening night
It also does make sense you would get someone like her to speak at something like that. Who do you pay when you want to have a lecture on politics other then someone who has been in politics? Who do you pay to give a lecture on drug abuse? Someone who has never touched drugs in their life? It makes perfect sense. Hopefully you don't have it in your mind that she'll come on stage dressed in a cheerleading outfit yelling "no sex = great sex!" (king of the hill reference if anyone gets it...) like something you'd see in a cartoon.

She can tell young girls, "I get paid $30,000 because I got knocked up at 17 and my mom's famous. You get nothing if you get knocked up because your mom's not famous". Yeah, that's quite a motivational speech.

She's a celebrity in her own right.

Following your examples, who would you get to talk about abstinence? Someone who has abstained.

Do you have laws on disclosing or limiting political contributions?
It can be a good way for companies to funnel money to a candidate in return for future favorable relations.

There have been rumors to that effect.

They are a bit like a screen door on a submarine or a picture window in a tank.

Mother wants best for her kids that's all. And Sarah Palin seems to be a good mother despite her drawbacks.
