SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the downrange velocity of an arrow given its weight in grains and muzzle velocity in feet per second (fps). The primary method suggested involves understanding projectile motion, which can be researched further through resources like Wikipedia. Participants highlighted the need for a solid grasp of trigonometric functions to apply the relevant equations effectively. The conversation emphasizes the importance of practical testing, such as using a chronograph, to obtain accurate velocity measurements at various distances.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of projectile motion principles
  • Knowledge of trigonometric functions
  • Familiarity with arrow weight measurement in grains
  • Experience with measuring muzzle velocity in fps
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the equations of motion for projectiles
  • Learn how to use a chronograph for measuring arrow velocity
  • Study the effects of drag on projectile motion
  • Explore advanced trigonometric applications in physics
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for archery enthusiasts, physics students, and anyone interested in the dynamics of projectile motion and arrow performance.

Homework Statement

Given an arrow weight of x grains and a muzzle velocity of y fps, is there a formula to compute approximate downrange velocity at, say, 20-80 yards?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

Other than attempting to shoot through a chrony at those distances, I don't have a clue to a pencil and paper solution.

Thank you, Coto; now I have something to do over the summer: Relearning trigonometric functions.
