SUMMARY

It is impossible to stand up from a straight-backed chair without leaning due to the position of the center of mass, which is located behind the point of contact between the feet and the floor. The discussion highlights that if friction is sufficiently high to prevent sliding, an individual can generate torque by pushing their feet against the floor while simultaneously pushing their legs against the chair. This interaction allows for a successful transition from sitting to standing.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of center of mass principles
  • Basic knowledge of torque and force generation
  • Friction concepts in physics
  • Experience with biomechanics of human movement
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of center of mass in biomechanics
  • Explore the role of torque in human movement
  • Study the effects of friction on motion and stability
  • Investigate practical applications of these concepts in ergonomic chair design
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, biomechanics researchers, ergonomists, and anyone interested in the mechanics of human movement and posture.

sit in a straight backed chair and try to stand without leaning. you are not able to do it .
why is it impossibe?

Because your center of mass is well behind the point of conact between your feet and the floor. If the friction was high enough that neither the chair or your feet would slide, then the person could stand up by pushing forward with this feet against the floor and backwards with his legs against the chair to generate a torque.
