PEM Fuel Cell

Hey everyone, I was just wondering, in a PEM fuel cell the Hydrogen ion diffusion through the membrane is an important step. But don't these ions need to diffuse through the anode as well to reach the membrane? Also, if this is the case and the anode is a metal like Pt, wouldn't the diffusion through the anode be very slow?
