Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of horsepower (HP) and its relation to the actual power output of a horse. Participants explore definitions, comparisons of human and horse power, and personal experiences related to the topic.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant states that the power of a horse is defined as 1 HP, equating to 736 W, and provides an example of a horse pulling a 75 kg load.
  • Another participant suggests that a human could also achieve 1 HP, but questions the sustainability of that power output.
  • Some participants express skepticism about relying on external sources, emphasizing personal experience over definitions.
  • There are comments reflecting on the relevance of rural experiences to the understanding of horsepower.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the comparison between horse and human power outputs, and there is disagreement regarding the relevance of personal experience versus established definitions.

Contextual Notes

Some statements depend on personal experiences and may not align with standardized definitions of horsepower. The discussion includes varying interpretations of what constitutes continuous power output.

The power of a horse is expected to be 1 HP by definition. 1 HP equals 736 W=736 J/s. If we use a horse ( and pulley and rope) to pull up a load of 75 kg, it can pull it about 1 meter per minute! A strong horse I think.

so is it over there?
here a man could do 1 HP...

Not continuously he can't. Did you read the wiki on this?

sorry,i have experience,i don`t need others to tell me things i know...

What? Where is the "former rural world"? Physics Forums is visited by people from all over the world, and the laws of physics are the same for everyone.
