SUMMARY

The third derivative of the distance-time function is called "jerk," which represents the rate of change of acceleration. In mathematical terms, if d(t) denotes distance, then d'(t) is velocity, d''(t) is acceleration, and d'''(t) is jerk. This concept is crucial for understanding motion dynamics in physics and engineering applications.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of calculus, specifically derivatives
  • Familiarity with kinematic equations
  • Knowledge of basic physics concepts related to motion
  • Experience with mathematical notation and terminology
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the applications of jerk in physics and engineering
  • Explore the mathematical implications of higher-order derivatives
  • Learn about the relationship between jerk and motion control systems
  • Investigate how jerk is measured in real-world scenarios
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, engineers working on motion control systems, and anyone interested in advanced kinematics and dynamics.

Hey um, what's the third derivative of the distance-time function?

d'(t)=velocity
d''(t)=v'(t)=acceleration
d'''(t)=v''(t)=a'(t)=??

I remember there was a special name for this function--but i can't remember what was; what is it called?

Jerk (or alternatively jolt).

The third derivative of the distance-time function is known as the jerk, or the rate of change of acceleration. It measures how quickly the acceleration is changing over time.
