SUMMARY

The regression equation provided is y=2.3-1(x) with an r² value of 0.78. The coefficient of correlation (r) is definitively -0.88 due to the negative slope of the equation. This negative correlation indicates a strong inverse relationship between the variables x and y, meaning that as x increases, y decreases. The coefficient of correlation ranges from -1 to 1, with negative values signifying a negative relationship.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of regression analysis
  • Familiarity with correlation coefficients
  • Knowledge of the concept of r-squared (r²)
  • Basic algebra skills for interpreting equations
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the properties of correlation coefficients in statistics
  • Learn about the implications of negative slopes in regression analysis
  • Explore the calculation and interpretation of r-squared values
  • Investigate the differences between correlation and causation
USEFUL FOR

Statisticians, data analysts, students studying statistics, and anyone involved in regression analysis or data interpretation will benefit from this discussion.

If the regression equation is y=2.3-1(x) and r^2 = 0.78, what is the value of the coefficient of correlation?

my answer was 0.88 and i got it wrong, is it -0.88 because of the negative slope in the equation? please help fast.. thnx

remember that a square root can have [tex]\pm a[/tex] as a root. Since the correlation is negative we must have a negative r.

Yes, the coefficient of correlation (r) would be -0.88 in this case because of the negative slope in the equation. The coefficient of correlation measures the strength and direction of the relationship between two variables, and is always between -1 and 1. In this case, the negative value indicates a strong negative relationship between x and y, meaning that as x increases, y decreases.
