Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of a 'flash card' in poker, specifically in the context of a World Poker Tour (WPT) tournament. Participants explore the implications of a card being shown on the dealer's deck, its relevance to gameplay, and the rules surrounding such occurrences.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes observing a 7 showing on the dealer's deck during a poker game, questioning the meaning of a 'flash card' and its implications for gameplay.
  • Another participant recalls a game where a face-up card is considered part of everyone's hand, suggesting a similarity to the situation described.
  • Some participants clarify that in Texas Hold 'Em, five community cards are revealed, but the situation discussed involves a single card showing on the deck, not on the table.
  • One participant insists that the term 'flash' was indeed used, indicating that the card shown was not part of the community cards and could affect the players' decisions.
  • Another suggests that the dealer may have accidentally revealed a card, which would need to be shown to all players to maintain fairness.
  • Several participants discuss the idea that a 'flashed card' is not drawable and may be treated as a 'burn card' in the game.
  • One participant provides a definition of a 'flash card' as one that is inadvertently shown and must be disclosed to all players, also referring to it as a 'killed card' or 'dead card.'
  • Another participant explains the concept of a burn card, which is discarded to prevent the influence of marked cards in the game.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the rules and implications of a 'flash card,' with no consensus reached on the exact nature of the situation or the correct terminology. Some agree on the definition of a flash card, while others remain uncertain about its application in the context discussed.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the specific rules of the game being played and how different casinos may handle the situation of a flashed card. The discussion reflects a variety of interpretations and experiences with poker rules.

So I am watching the WPT right and for some reason on the stack of cards, a 7 was showing. One guy had a pair of 5's and hte second guy has an Ace and a 7. The guy was wondering if he should bet and the announcer was talken about the 7 being shown on the deck was a 'flash card' or something with 'flash' in it. What in the world does that mean and why was the 7 showing on the deck? (It was on the deck, not on the table)

We used to play a game that had one card face up on the table that was considered to be in everyone's hand. I didn't know they played games like that in tournament poker, but your description sounds like that.

The one that seems popular, Texas Hold 'Em, has -five- face-up cards that are in everybody's hand!

No no, its texas hold em but the cards the dealer had, there was a card showing for some reason and they were sayen something about a flash card. It must be under a special circumstance because that never happens. And the cards weren't on the table on the flop or anything, but there was a single card showing on the dealer's deck that wasnt going to be played.

Ugh ill just re-watch the tournament in 1 hour on the travel channel :P

In Texas hold em, the five face up cards are revealed to see who has the better combination thereby winning the pot.

I believe the flash you mentioned is actually "flush" which means a combination of five cards having the same suit

The single card on the dealer's deck is the community card. The players have to match their cards with the community card and they will have the option to pass or play with their combination.

no no no nojsdkfajdlf;a it was 'flash'.

The flop wasnt down at all. One guy had 2 5's, one had an A, 7. Nothing was down and he's deciding if he shoudl call or not and there was a 7 showing on the DECK , NOT the table, and the announcers were saying something about its not a good idea to call because there's a 7 as the flash card which means there's 1 less 7 in the deck that he can catch to make a pair better then the other guys 5 pair.

Think your talken about the wrong game. This is NL texas hold em. Someone watch it in 1 hour and see what I am talken about :P

Maybe the dealer accidentally "flashed" a card, so they revealed it to all to be fair?

Or maybe they just used SFX to show it to the viewers at home for some reason?

See I am thinking that may be it because the announcers said that card wasnt 'live' which means its not going to be a card possible to draw. So if it was accidently shown, itd be natural that u show it to everyone and it wouldn't be a drawable card for the rest of the hand.

I was thinking that too maybe, but in those situations isn't it customary to deal the hand over? Or maybe the players have an option.

I dunno. Probably one of those things where every table is different or it depends on the casino. But yah, i just watched the replay and a 'flashed card' is a card that was accidently exposed so its taken back and put up as the 'burn card'... now i got to go look up what a burnt card is :P

Ok found out what a burnt card is... screw poker, I am going to go watch blackjack :P

FLASH CARD - A CARD THAT IS INADVERTANTLY SHOWN TO ONE OR MORE PERSONS AND TO MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF THE GAME MUST BE SHOWN TO ALL PERSONS. ALSO KNOWN AS A KILLED CARD OR DEAD CARD.

Sorry for the caps, but there is so much wrong information in this thread I had to make the right explanation stand out.

Burn Card - The card on the top of the deck that is discarded before dealing to limit the effects of marked or creased cards. In effect it stops Joe Blow from putting a pen to the ace of spades and knowing when it is going to be played and to whom it wil be dealt (in a stud game).
