The Mystery of the Minus Sign: Finding the Cross Product of a x b

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around finding the cross product of two vectors, specifically a = 5.0m, i and b = 4.3m, k. The original poster notes a discrepancy between their calculation and the answer provided in a textbook, which includes a negative sign.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants explore the reasoning behind the negative sign in the cross product, with references to vector properties and the right-hand rule. Some participants discuss the relationship between the unit vectors involved.

Discussion Status

There is an active exploration of the concepts related to the cross product, with some participants providing insights into vector directionality and the right-hand rule. However, no consensus has been reached regarding the original poster's question about the source of the negative sign.

Contextual Notes

The original poster's calculation suggests a misunderstanding or oversight regarding the direction of the resulting vector in the context of the cross product. The discussion includes references to vector orientation and the right-hand rule, which may imply assumptions about the coordinate system being used.

find the cross product a x b of the vectors a = 5.0m,i and b=4.3m,k
[tex]5.0m\ast 4.3m\ast \sin (90)=22m^2,\hat {j}[/tex]

The back of the book gives
[tex]-(22m^2)\hat {j}[/tex]

Where does the minus sign come from?

Naturally

[tex]\vec{i}\times\vec{k}=-\vec{j}[/tex]

,because

[tex]\vec{k}\times\vec{i}=\vec{j}[/tex]

Daniel.

thanks, dextercioby

Or: "right hand rule". Curl the fingers of your right hand from the positive x-axis (i) to the positive z-axis "j". You thumb will be pointing down the negative y-axis.
