Discussion Overview

The thread explores a number puzzle involving the values of TWO, THREE, FOUR, SEVEN, and EIGHT based on a series of equations and conditions. Participants engage in solving the puzzle through various proposed values and reasoning about the relationships between the numbers.

Discussion Character

 • Exploratory
 • Mathematical reasoning
 • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

 • Post 1 introduces a puzzle with equations involving the numbers TWO, THREE, FOUR, SEVEN, and EIGHT, posing specific conditions for their values.
 • Post 2 questions the phrasing of one of the conditions, indicating potential confusion.
 • Post 3 provides a set of proposed values for the numbers: TWO = 360, THREE = 72, FOUR = 360, SEVEN = 0, EIGHT = 1/2.
 • Post 5 suggests an alternative value for SEVEN, proposing it could be 1 based on the last equation, but notes it does not work with the other equations.
 • Post 6 reiterates the suggestion that SEVEN could be 1, but acknowledges inconsistencies with other equations.
 • Post 9 presents a different set of values: TWO = 360.25, THREE = 72, FOUR = 359.75, SEVEN = 0, EIGHT = 1/2, indicating a slight variation from previous proposals.
 • Post 10 acknowledges the previous values and suggests that SEVEN should equal 1, providing calculations to support this adjustment while also recognizing the contributions of other participants.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the values of SEVEN, with some proposing it could be 0 while others suggest it could be 1. There is no consensus on the final values of the numbers, and multiple competing views remain throughout the discussion.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes various assumptions and interpretations of the equations presented, with some participants noting that certain values do not satisfy all conditions simultaneously. The phrasing of the original puzzle may also contribute to confusion.

Nothing big; just made it up... but kind of fun to figure out... well... at least I think so. :smile:

- If THREE were a number and thrice THREE was 216... what number would it be?

- If EIGHT were a number and EIGHT times THREE were 36... what number would it be?

- If TWO and FOUR were numbers and TWO added to FOUR equaled 10 times THREE, and TWO minus FOUR equaled EIGHT times SEVEN, and SEVEN times itself 3 times equaled SEVEN... what are they?

TWO = ?
THREE = ?
FOUR = ?
SEVEN = ?
EIGHT = ?

This is what confusing me. Did you phrase it correctly?

TWO = 360
THREE = 72
FOUR = 360
SEVEN = 0
EIGHT = 1/2

BycicleTree... you're too smart. :biggrin: I'll have to find a very cryptic way of making one up, just for you.

I got all of them equally except seven: couldn't it be 1?¿?¿?

Just using the last "equation" it could be 1; but it doesn't work if you use the results with the other two equations.

just use the simulteneus equation right??

Yep, you could put it that way.

I also get the following.

TWO = 360.25
THREE = 72
FOUR = 359.75
SEVEN = 0
EIGHT = 1/2

Wow! You've struck something here... although you'll need to make SEVEN = 1.

- If TWO and FOUR were numbers and TWO added to FOUR equaled 10 times THREE, and TWO minus FOUR equaled EIGHT times SEVEN, and SEVEN times itself 3 times equaled SEVEN... what are they?

360.25 + 359.75 = 720 = 10 * 72
360.25 - 359.75 = 0.5 = 0.5 * 1
1 * 1 * 1 = 1

That's really good Delta. No one else caught that (including me). :biggrin:
