Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the availability of accelerator laboratories in New England, particularly focusing on high-energy particle accelerators. Participants share information about existing labs, their status, and inquire about additional facilities in the region.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes that the Bates Laboratory and the Harvard Cyclotron lab were the only known high-energy particle accelerator labs in New England, with Harvard now shut down and Bates expected to close in the future.
  • Another participant mentions the Northeast Proton Therapy Center in Boston, which has a cyclotron of approximately 290 MeV.
  • A participant suggests that while not in New England, Brookhaven Lab in Long Island, NY, and Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, also have accelerator facilities.
  • There is a discussion about the location of Cornell, with one participant expressing confusion about its location and the relationship to Ithaca.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the closure of certain labs and the existence of others, but there is no consensus on the completeness of the list of accelerator labs in the New England area, as additional suggestions are made.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty about the geographical definitions of New England and the proximity of other labs, indicating a potential ambiguity in regional classifications.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in high-energy particle physics, accelerator technology, or those seeking research opportunities in the New England area may find this discussion relevant.

The Bates Laboratory and the Harvard Cyclotron lab use to be the only two labs in New England that I knew of which had high energy particle accelerators. The Harvard lab shut down and Bates lab will be shutting down in the future. There is a new lab in Boston at the Northeast Proton Therapy Center (has a cyclotron of ~290 MeV). I was wondering if anyone knew of any other accelerator labs in the New England area? Thanks.

This is not exactly "New England", but Long Island, NY is not that far from the Boston area. And Brookhaven Lab is there. Or go to Ithaca NY. Cornell has accelerators galore...

Cornell huh? Thanks! I was totally unaware of that. Where is Cornell again? I was aware of Brookhaven. I decided I want to live in New England though. Speaking of which, thanks. I see spelled New "England" wrong. :-p Can you correct that? I shot this off right before I went for a walk and that "looked" like the right spelling. However as more and more time goes by the more I think I'm a touch dyslexic. Thanks.

Recall that I told you to "go" to Ithaca, NY. That's where Cornell is.

Thanks. I didn't know that you were saying that Cornell is in Ithaca. I guess I incorrectly assumed (back in my mind) that you were telling me that Ithaca has accelerators and Cornell has accelerators. Or I missed the Ithica.

Thanks again.
