SUMMARY

The calculation presented in the discussion involves determining the number of significant figures to retain in the result of the expression (11.13 - 2.6) * 10^4 divided by (103.05 + 16.9) * 10^-6. The key conclusion is that the final result should reflect the least number of significant digits from the values used in the calculation. In this case, the number with the least significant figures is 2.6, which has two significant digits, thus the final answer should also retain two significant figures.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of significant figures in mathematical calculations
  • Familiarity with basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication)
  • Knowledge of scientific notation and its application
  • Ability to identify the least precise measurement in a calculation
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the rules for determining significant figures in various mathematical operations
  • Learn how to apply significant figures in scientific notation
  • Explore examples of significant figures in real-world measurements
  • Review common pitfalls in significant figure calculations
USEFUL FOR

Students in mathematics or science courses, educators teaching significant figures, and professionals in fields requiring precise calculations, such as engineering and chemistry.

How many significant figures should be retained in the result of the following calculation.

(11.13 - 2.6) * 10^4
-----------------------
(103.05 + 16.9) * 10^-6

is it 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 or 5 ?

Oops

I just read the posting guidelines more closely, so instead i will give u a hint :-)
You should look at the entire "formula" (I lack a better word), and find the number with least significant digits, that's the amount of significant digits in your final result.
