Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the transformation of the tangent function, specifically comparing the equation y - 3 = -tan(-2x + π) with the standard y = tan(x). Participants are examining the effects of various transformations on the function.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Mathematical reasoning

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • The original poster attempts to identify and describe the transformations applied to the tangent function, including horizontal compression, reflections, translations, and vertical displacement. Some participants question the correctness of the transformation notation used.

Discussion Status

The discussion is ongoing, with some participants providing feedback on the original poster's analysis. There is acknowledgment of a potential error in the transformation notation, indicating a collaborative effort to clarify the concepts involved.

Contextual Notes

Participants are working within the constraints of homework guidelines, focusing on understanding the transformations without providing complete solutions.

HOw does [tex]y-3=-\tan (-2x+\pi)[/tex] differ from [tex]y=tan(x)[/tex]

[tex]y=-\tan [-2 (x+ \frac {\pi} {2} )] +3[/tex] rearranged

It differs because it has a

Horizontal compression by a factor of 1/2
it is reflected in the x and y-axis
there is a horizontal translation [tex]\frac {\pi} {2}[/tex] units to the left
and a vertical displacement 3 uinits up.

Can someone please tell me if I made any mistakes?

Looks like a good start.

hallosivy, shouldn't that be -2(x-pi/2) instead of plus ?

Yep, sorry, didn't look close enough.
