Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the contents of participants' bookmarks bars in web browsers, exploring what these bookmarks reveal about their interests and online habits. The scope includes personal organization, preferences in web content, and the use of bookmarks versus other methods of accessing frequently visited sites.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants list various bookmarks, including links to academic articles, forums, and personal interests such as quantum dots and Josephson junctions.
  • Others express that they have few bookmarks, as they remember most URLs, indicating a preference for direct access over bookmarking.
  • There are mentions of using folders to organize bookmarks by categories like linguistics, physical sciences, and media.
  • Some participants clarify that the original post (OP) may have been misunderstood, with some thinking it referred to recent browsing history rather than bookmarks.
  • Several participants note the differences in how bookmarks are managed across different browsers, particularly Firefox.
  • Some express confusion about the terminology used, such as the reference to the OP and the distinction between bookmarks and browsing history.
  • One participant humorously notes having no bookmarks at all, while others mention using alternative methods like the 'Favorites' list.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants exhibit a mix of agreement and disagreement regarding the interpretation of the OP's question. While some focus on the content of bookmarks, others believe the discussion pertains to browsing history. There is no consensus on the best way to manage bookmarks or the significance of their contents.

Contextual Notes

Some participants mention the limitations of their bookmarks due to overflow or the need for scrolling, which raises questions about the effectiveness of their organization methods.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be of interest to individuals looking to optimize their online organization, those curious about the browsing habits of others, or users exploring the features of different web browsers.

I have very little in my bookmarks. Most of my most frequently visited websites I already know the urls of, so they don't need to be there.

All that on your bookmark BAR?! Sort of defeats the purpose if you still have to scroll through it, doesn't it?

Mine has links to 3 email accounts, .Mac (I should take that off, I don't visit it often enough to need a bookmark for it, and until I get a second computer, it's not doing me much good since my main use was to sync home and office computers), PF, PubMed, and the library eJournals site.

Firefox's bar spans the entire width of the window. Mine all fit with room to spare.

I have way too many to list them all here

I personally don't use the firefox bookmarks toolbar.edit... hmm I need to learn how to read

Wow wolram, you have some interesting stuff.

I have six folders on bookmarks bar: Irish Stuff, Forums, Connect (mostly mail and school, several networking sites), Scholarly Stuff, Media (including RSS feeds and torrent searches), and Comp (OS and software sites, mostly). All in all, there are well over a thousand bookmarked sites contained in the folders. I honestly use most of them very frequently, though. Fantasy Sports remains my major online activity.

I have 10~ish folders, and 8 links not in any folder. I'm at uni right now so I can't check...

What the OP was referring to is your recent history of sites visited, not bookmarks.

I think the op is referring to a feature in firefox, and a few other browsers (not sure if IE has it). It allows you to put bookmarks on a toolbar like so:
Ah, he should say so. Some people are listing history, some are listing firefox bookmarks.

My toolbar bookmarks are :

PF, Google, My Dept. Homepage, 2 Email accounts, Mapquest, Wiki and Wolfram.

And, rather than starting a new thread, I'll post this here:

What level of http://www.4degreez.com/misc/dante-inferno-test.mv" are you going to?:bugeye:

Level 1 - Limbo

Charon ushers you across the river Acheron, and you find yourself upon the brink of grief's abysmal valley. You are in Limbo, a place of sorrow without torment. You encounter a seven-walled castle, and within those walls you find rolling fresh meadows illuminated by the light of reason, whereabout many shades dwell. These are the virtuous pagans, the great philosophers and authors, unbaptised children, and others unfit to enter the kingdom of heaven. You share company with Caesar, Homer, Virgil, Socrates, and Aristotle. There is no punishment here, and the atmosphere is peaceful, yet sad.
