SUMMARY

Gyroscopes resist changes in their orientation due to the principle of conservation of angular momentum. When a gyroscope spins, it maintains its axis of rotation, making it stable and resistant to external forces attempting to alter its position. This phenomenon explains why gyroscopes do not easily fall over and remain upright during motion. Understanding these principles is essential for applications in navigation and stabilization systems.

PREREQUISITES
  • Conservation of angular momentum
  • Basic principles of rotational motion
  • Understanding of gyroscopic effects
  • Familiarity with physics concepts related to torque
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the mathematical formulation of angular momentum
  • Explore the applications of gyroscopes in navigation systems
  • Learn about gyroscopic stability in aircraft and spacecraft

As the title says, I'm wondering how/why gyroscopes work. Why do they resist being rotated in a direction other than the direction in which they're already being rotated, and why don't they fall down?

I'm not the one to give a detailed explanation, but as a starter you should investigate conservation of angular momentum.
