Discussion Overview

The thread revolves around brainstorming creative and humorous names for a band. Participants share various suggestions and engage in playful dialogue about the potential names, exploring the themes of music style and band identity.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose names like "Fred Zapplin Presents," "Wookie Translator," and "Population Gravy," among others.
  • One participant suggests that the band should avoid using someone else's name to prevent legal issues.
  • Several humorous suggestions are made, including "They told us not to make this band name too long - so we did just to piss them off," and "Thinking About It."
  • There are discussions about the appropriateness of long band names and the potential for them to be memorable or forgettable.
  • Some participants express that certain names sound more like album titles rather than band names.
  • Names like "Statutory Ape," "Dihydrogen monoxide," and "Aphrodesiac" are introduced, showcasing a mix of humor and creativity.
  • One participant humorously suggests using their screen name in a band name, like "Jonny Trigonometry and the Vectors."

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the humorous nature of the suggestions but do not reach a consensus on a single band name. Multiple competing views and suggestions remain throughout the discussion.

Contextual Notes

Some names proposed may not be suitable due to potential copyright issues, and there is an ongoing debate about the effectiveness of long versus short band names.

Who May Find This Useful

Musicians, band members, and those interested in creative naming processes may find this discussion valuable for inspiration and humor.

We've been trying to think of a good band name, and haven't concluded on anything yet, can you help us out?

What we've got so far:

Fred Zapplin Presents

Wookie Translator

Population Gravy

Plasitc Venture

Joanie Loves Chotchie Loves That Blonde From Three's Company... Oh Yeah, Susanne Sommers

Mad House Harry And His Hankerin' For Mahsed Potatoes

Two Days At The VFW

there were more but I can't remember them right now...

Science news on Phys.org
What kind of music?

kinda like a melding of frank zappa, Primus, Mike Patton type stuff, classic rock type stuff, P-Funk, Herbie Hancock...

so basically sort of like jazz with a foothold in funk and classic rock

But We need a lead singer! (I think)

oh yeah, peppered with a little bit of death metal...

as you may already be thinkin' We're still tryin to figure out what we sound like. We've only got a few songs and they are all basically held together in a jam session type format, but no singing, so it's leaning more towards jazz fusion right now, with all the above influences. Hopefully we'll get some recordings made by mid January, but we're going to need a name then... I think. And it must be a funny name, so what name so far do you find the funniest?

how about "Classic Fazz"

The members of my friend's band were sitting around after an early practice, and someone asked "What are we going to name ourselves?"
And someone replied "Good question."

What did they name their band?

"Good question".

you should add "Bad Question" to the list as well.

I don't have any suggestions for names, but can make a suggestion of what not to do...don't use someone else's name in your band name...at least not unless you want to pay them royalties for the rest of your life every time you put up a flyer or get a gig using their name. Also, those really long names should get trashed. Who's going to remember something like that? Stick to two or three word names unless it makes a good acronym, and then use the acronym.

How about:

The Enigmatics

Wookie Translator

That would be the quirkiest name for a band.

Feel free to use any of these names rejected by all three of the bands I was in during college:

Scrupulous
Belle Curves (this band had two girls in it) (even I though this one was forced and too "clever-clever")
Travelogue (we almost went with this one; sounds good, but "looks" wrong)
Vanadium (They said it sounded "heavy metal"; I assured them it was a relatively light metal)
Ted Nugent (they argued it was taken, I never belived them)

you spelled chachi wrong! scott bayo... mmmmmm...

i think a lot of those sound more like album titles than band names.

You should call yourselves "They told us not to make this band name too long - so we did just to piss them off"

or ttuntmtbntl-swdjtpto for short.

thats okay, it's part of the band name

most of these could be names of the band, or song names or album titles

Do you ever wonder how long it must;ve take Haan Solo to learn the wookie language?

Do you think Chuck Norris or Donna Sommers would get pissed?
