Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a classic river crossing puzzle involving a man, a goat, a flower, and a lion. Participants explore the constraints of the problem, including the rules about what can be transported and what cannot be left together, while attempting to devise a solution for safely crossing the river.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant outlines the basic rules of the puzzle, emphasizing that the man can only take one item at a time and cannot leave the goat with the flower or the lion.
  • Another participant proposes a sequence of moves to solve the puzzle, detailing how the man can transport each item while adhering to the constraints.
  • A later reply questions the original problem's wording, suggesting that it may not explicitly require the man to take the animals with him, hinting at a possible trick in the puzzle.
  • Some participants express confusion or seek clarification on the solution, indicating a need for a more straightforward answer.
  • One participant acknowledges a previous oversight in not seeing another's proposed solution and expresses appreciation for the clarity of the answer.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is no clear consensus on the solution, as participants present different interpretations and methods for solving the puzzle. Some agree on the basic rules, while others propose varying sequences of moves or question the problem's requirements.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the implications of the original problem's wording and the assumptions involved in the solution process. There are also references to previous posts that were edited or deleted, indicating ongoing refinement of ideas.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in logic puzzles, problem-solving strategies, or recreational mathematics may find this discussion engaging.

the man has to cross the river with his animals and the flower...

A fair bit simpler then the royalty/pesant/wife deal..

|MFGL (move goat)
GM|FL (go back)
G|MFL (move lion)
MGL|F (move goat)
L|MGF (move flower)
MLF|G (go back)
LF|MG (move goat)
MFGL| (done)

The man obviously moves every time and is always has the boat. The lion/flower moves could be switched, neither can be left alone with the goat anyhow.

Well it says here that only he has to cross the river. Original problem says nothing of taking animals with him. Is that trick or is it deeper?

|MFGL woww.. wonder ful... sorry fot yesterday. i didnt see ur answer :( please never use that kind of text colour. :( thxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

[EDIT] Long winded speculation on previous post deleted, since the original solution was it, it no longer makes any sense.

No prob. I made it white so people could avoid reading it, should they not want to know.

it is quite easy answer :-

1- he will take the goat at first
2-he will again go backto the another side of the river and will get lion to his destination, leaving flower over the other side.
3-then again he has to come back with goat from the destination by landing the lion on that destination side.
4-now,he will take the flower to the destination side
5-then he will come back the other side alone and take the goat with him to the destination place.

by going through all these process he can save everything he has !
