SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the impact of Earth's rotation on the force of gravity, specifically examining how centrifugal force alters the effective gravitational pull experienced at the surface. The formula for angular velocity (ω = 2π/60*60*24) is introduced to quantify this effect. Participants highlight that the centrifugal force, calculated as mω²r, acts perpendicular to the gravitational force, thus reducing the net gravitational force experienced by objects on Earth.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts, particularly gravity and centrifugal force.
  • Familiarity with angular velocity calculations.
  • Knowledge of the relationship between mass, radius, and gravitational force.
  • Basic mathematical skills for applying formulas.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the effects of centrifugal force on gravity in different planetary bodies.
  • Explore advanced physics topics such as general relativity and its implications on gravity.
  • Learn about the mathematical derivation of gravitational force equations.
  • Investigate the role of Earth's rotation in ocean currents and atmospheric dynamics.
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators teaching gravitational concepts, and anyone interested in the dynamics of Earth's rotation and its effects on gravity.

What would the force of gravity really be, without the Earth's rotation providing centrifugal force?

(In terms of current g-force)

come on, you can work this out for yourself …

ω = 2π/60*60*24,

and the centrifugal force is mω2r towards the Earth's axis (ie not vertical) :wink:
