Work experience for physics students at college

Im having difficulty thinking about where i can apply that i have half a chance of being accepted! Due to health and safety regs etc i realise this may be difficult. Can anyone give me some ideas of places, or if youve had anything related to physics can you let me know how you applied, what you said in the letter etc etc.
I am based in the North west of England, but I do not mind travelling.
