Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the concept of photon momentum and the question of how it can exist despite photons being theoretically massless. The scope includes conceptual understanding and clarification of the nature of photons in physics.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions how a massless photon can possess momentum, indicating a potential gap in their understanding.
  • Another participant emphasizes that photons are not classical particles, suggesting that classical mechanics does not apply to them.
  • Links to external resources and previous threads are provided by participants as potential aids for further understanding.
  • A later reply indicates that the initial questioner feels they have gained understanding, attributing it to their previous lack of knowledge.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion does not reach a consensus on the nature of photon momentum, as the initial question remains open and participants provide differing levels of clarification without resolving the underlying question.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the nature of mass and momentum in the context of quantum mechanics may not be fully articulated, and the discussion relies on external resources for deeper exploration.

If a photon is theoretically zero mass, how can it have any momentum at all?

I may just be missing some knowledge.

Thanks a lot guys, I understand it now. Seems it was just a lack of knowledge on my part.
