Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the idea of commemorating Albert Einstein's death with an international holiday. Participants explore various perspectives on the significance of such a holiday, its potential impact on public awareness of physics, and the appropriateness of celebrating historical figures in general.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that Einstein's death should be recognized with an international holiday.
  • Others argue that a holiday could trivialize Einstein's contributions, suggesting that true appreciation requires understanding of his theories.
  • A few participants suggest that if a holiday were to exist, it could be used to raise awareness about physics.
  • One participant humorously notes that everyday could be considered a holiday in the context of physics discussions.
  • Concerns are raised about the effectiveness of holidays in raising awareness, with one participant suggesting that education would be a better approach.
  • Some participants engage in light-hearted banter and jokes, including references to historical events and personal anecdotes.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of opinions on the idea of a holiday for Einstein, with no consensus reached. Some support the idea, while others believe it would diminish his legacy. The discussion includes humor and personal reflections, contributing to a lively debate.

Contextual Notes

There are misunderstandings regarding the significance of certain holidays mentioned, and some participants correct each other on historical details without resolving the broader discussion about the appropriateness of a holiday for Einstein.

it should be an international holiday.

Nah, I believe a holiday would cheapen Einstein's exploits. You can only really appreciate him if you remotely understand his theories, otherwise it's just like idolizing some hollywood celebrity schmoe.

unless the holiday was used to raise physics awareness?

Then everyday is a holiday here.

Holidays don't raise awareness, think how many kids really know that Christmas is Christ's death and resurection, as opposed to "get presents". I bet most people think Einstein was a dinosaur of the Cretaceous era, battling T-Rexs and eating fruits from trees.

jj no disrespect but xmas was his supposed birth (i have read that it was actually on 8th october) and easter was his crucifiction and ressurection, but holidays arent really the ideal solution to raise awareness i think, i believe just educating the general public would raise awareness for physics you know? just get a couple of kegs maybe a big bonfire a couple of physics lecturers and u got urself a good ol' fashion ho-down.
peace

Kids are screwed up enough as it is. Why mangle their minds more with stuff like Special Relativity?

It'll explain how they are 'special' 'relative' to the other kids.

One of my all time favorite editorial cartoons appeared in the Washington Post the day after Einstein died. It showed the Earth with planets, stars and galaxies in the background. There was a sign stuck in the Earth that read, "Albert Einstein lived here."
