Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around constructing a rotating wood platform designed to hold an adult, powered by an electric motor. Participants explore mechanical components, construction methods, and operational controls, focusing on practical DIY solutions.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks advice on mechanical parts and construction ideas for a rotating platform that can be controlled from a distance.
  • Another participant inquires about budget and available resources for parts, suggesting that these factors may influence the design.
  • A third participant humorously comments on the posting behavior of the original poster, indicating a light-hearted tone in the discussion.
  • A later reply proposes using a D.C. motor due to its ability to reverse direction by changing current, suggesting a specific construction method involving a strong stand, ball-bearing set, and a belt system to connect the motor to the platform.
  • The same reply also mentions controlling the RPM of the platform by adjusting the radius of the wheel connected to it, indicating a mechanical approach to speed control.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the best approach or specific components, and multiple ideas and suggestions are presented without resolution.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the design requirements, such as weight capacity and desired speed, are not explicitly stated. The discussion also lacks detailed specifications for the motor and other mechanical parts.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in DIY projects, particularly those involving mechanical construction and electric motor applications, may find this discussion relevant.

I am trying to construct a wood platform that rotates both clockwise and counter - clockwise. It needs to be able to hold an adult and be propelled by an electric motor that can be operated from a short distance from the platform. It doesn't need to be fancy, I just need it to rotate people at a decent speed. I have some basic ideas about the construction, but don't know what mechanical parts to use. Please help me figure this out.

What are your ideas, how much can you spend, and what are your resources for parts?

Hey Harry, hee hee, you faked me out. I happened to pop up your other post and thought that this one never posted. You're not supposed to double post. Tsk tsk tsk...

The best way to it.
the best and the cheapest way to do it is that you should use a D.C motor its advantage over A.C motor, for your project is, by reversing the current you can reverse the direction of the rotation of motor. To construct the platform make a strong stand, and the platformmust be connected to it with a ball-bearing set. at the bottom of the platform fix a wheel on which a belt (to connect motor to platform) can be used. fix the motor on the stand and connectit with the platform using a rubber belt. you can control the RPM of the platform by using a suitable radius of the wheel fixed to the platform, using larger wheel decrease the RPM of the platform. make suitable connection witha thw battery and rotate it any direction you want.
