Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the motion of an object that starts with an initial velocity of zero while experiencing non-zero acceleration. Participants explore the implications of these conditions on the object's motion.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants discuss the nature of the object's motion, questioning whether it starts at rest and experiences acceleration, particularly in relation to gravity. They also consider the role of external forces and the implications of Newton's laws on the object's continued acceleration.

Discussion Status

The discussion is active, with participants sharing their thoughts on how the object's motion is characterized by changing velocity due to acceleration. There is a recognition that the specific nature of the acceleration is not defined, leading to varied interpretations.

Contextual Notes

Participants note the lack of information regarding external forces and the specific value of the acceleration, which may influence their understanding of the motion described.

If the initial velocity of a object is zero but the acceleration is not zero, what is the object's motion like??

Physics news on Phys.org
it seems like the object just started at rest...

yeah i guess do you think it starts at rest but it experiences acceleration due to gravity? :'(

does it say anything about external forces?

No it doesn't but it just asking to describe the motion of the object

i'd say if the acceleration is not zero that the object will continue to accelerate accroding to Newton's laws...

yeah ...umm

Thanks for your input sciencegirl

Of course, you didn't say what the acceleration was: all you can really say is that the velocity changes!

i'd say that it would be like a car going from 0-? mph, etc.

intial velocity is 0 but since the car is accelerating it will continue to accelerate...
