Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the search for historical and current stock data suitable for machine learning applications in stock analysis. Participants explore various sources and the limitations associated with accessing this data.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a need for both historical and current stock data, specifying requirements for price, earnings, and other useful statistics for machine learning research.
  • Another participant suggests using Google as a potential source for data.
  • A different participant notes that their experience with Google yielded mostly trend information rather than the specific data needed, and mentions restrictions on automated access to Google Finance.
  • Links to external resources are provided by participants, including one to Investopedia and another to a site offering Yahoo data.
  • Concerns are raised about violating terms of service when accessing data from Yahoo, highlighting the importance of adhering to legal guidelines.
  • A participant questions the necessity of automated data collection, suggesting that manual retrieval might be sufficient.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best sources for stock data, and multiple competing views regarding accessibility and legality of data retrieval methods remain evident.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the availability of comprehensive data and the implications of terms of service for various platforms. There is also a lack of clarity on the specific volume of data required for the intended machine learning project.

I'm looking for a lot of data, preferably one version that is a year or more old and one that is current. The data I want is just the stats related to the stock. For example, the price, earnings, and anything else considered useful in stock analysis. I need the older version to have at least a few months worth of history for all the stats.

I want it because I want to do some research with machine learning AI and stock analysis. I need the data to train my AI. It has to be relatively old so I can use the current data to give the AI accurate feedback about long term trends.

Did you try Google?

From what I tried, there isn't much there. All I get is a lot about trends, but nothing about data. If you're talking about Google Finance, it's against their terms of service to access it with an automated program.

How much data do you need that you can't just manually get it?
