Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the best methods for attaching PVC materials specifically for boat construction, focusing on achieving the strongest possible bond. The scope includes practical applications and material properties relevant to marine environments.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the best method to attach PVC for boat use, emphasizing the need for a strong bond.
  • Another participant suggests using glue available at home centers for PVC plumbing, noting its effectiveness and ease of use, while also mentioning the importance of a cleaner for optimal bonding.
  • A different participant proposes the idea of melting PVC to create a bond, although they admit to not having tried this method.
  • Another contributor mentions that plastic welding can be strong and implies that this might be a viable option for bonding PVC.
  • There is a question about the types of joints (lap or butt) and a suggestion that lap joints may be stronger, with a recommendation for solvent glue as a sufficient bonding method.
  • One participant advises considering marine grade adhesives specifically for boat applications.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various methods for bonding PVC, with no consensus on the single best approach. Multiple competing views on techniques and materials remain unresolved.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention different bonding methods without providing detailed comparisons of their effectiveness or specific conditions under which each method might be optimal.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in boat construction, marine applications, or those seeking to bond PVC materials effectively.

does anyone know the best way in which to attach pvc with pvc? this is for a boat, so it must be as strong as possible.

Engineering news on Phys.org
The glue sold at home centers for attaching the PVC plumbing bonds the plastic together quite well and is fairly inexpensive to boot. There is a cleaner as well (typically sold right next to it) and aside from a nasty smell they set quickly and are easy to use. With the PVC plumbing, it seems the tubing is as likely to break as the joint if you try to separate a joint that did not set in the right direction...

You could somehow melt the PVC and let it cool. Haven't tried it though.

Plastic welds can be fairly strong. I guess that is what the poster above is suggesting.

What kind of joints, i.e. lap or butt joints? Lap would be stronger, and a solvent glue as Cliff_J mentioned would be sufficient.

Plastic welding is a possibility - but I am not sure of the experience with PVC sheet or plank.

You might try comparing bond strength with the two methods.

marine grade

If its for a boat you intend to use, you should check into a marine grade adhesive.
