Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the behavior of charge redistribution in a circuit involving two unequal capacitors connected with an inductor. Participants explore the conditions under which the charges will redistribute and the implications of this configuration on voltage and charge balance.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Mathematical reasoning, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes a scenario with two capacitors of unequal capacitance and equal initial charges connected in a specific manner, asking how charges will redistribute and the reasoning behind it.
  • Another participant emphasizes that after the connection, the voltage across each capacitor must be the same, suggesting that this is a fundamental condition for charge redistribution.
  • A mathematical approach is proposed, involving two equations that relate the charges and capacitances, indicating a method to solve for the new charge distributions.
  • It is noted that charges will move until the potential difference across both capacitors is equal.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the principle that the voltage across the capacitors must equalize, but the specifics of the charge redistribution process and the mathematical treatment remain open to further exploration and discussion.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not resolve the mathematical steps required to fully analyze the charge redistribution, and assumptions regarding initial conditions and the role of the inductor are not fully articulated.

Who May Find This Useful

we have 2 capacitors having unequal capacities and eual charges both are connected to each other in a way such that the positive terminal of one capacitance is connected to the negative terminal of the othere capacitance and vice versa, and between these capacitances we have an induator, how will the charges redistribute themselves, and why?

please answer

After connection, V on each C must be the same.
There are two equations:
[tex]Q'_1 C_1=Q'_2 C_2[/tex],
[tex]Q'_1+Q'_2=Q_1-Q_2.[/tex]
Solve them.

the charges will move until the pd across them is the same.
